If he had downshifted, his back end would have locked up from engine braking, slid out to the right and he would have hit the wall going sideways. If he did, in fact, lose his brakes, nothing he could have done at that point would have prevented hitting the barrier.

If they flipped, the roof would be all smashed trapping the driver and co-driver. No way possible can you flip like that.
Obviosly they flipped - look at the tree sideways at the end of the video.... And look at the radio cord coming from the helmet... I think they rested on side of the vehicle but they definitely flipped the car...
You can see the instructor grab the wheel to prevent the car from flipping from the get-go...
