did VW actually hit 252mph on their test car? I remember reading somewhere in EVO it says that VW never actually achieved 252mph, and the chief designer of this car has already left VW.

I dont think it has been taken to 252mph yet- I think it is just a theoretical figure. I never put too much faith in 'projected' top speeds- the Koenigsegg CC8s was supposed to top the McLaren F1, but I don't believe it ever did. Now the 'egg CCr is supposed to top the 250 mark, but I dont believe anyone has done that either. I know one took a trip off track at around 190mph on an attempt in the wet
