TVR coming to the US?
TVR Eyes U.S.
March 26, 2002
TVR, a British specialist sports car manufacturer, is in talks with U.S. distributors to introduce some of its models in the world's largest car market, the Financial Times reported.
Although TVR assembled only 936 cars last year and relied on UK orders for 95 per cent of its sales, the company believes exports could eventually account for up to half its output.
TVR said it decided to enter the U.S. market following a "wave of inquiries from potential customers, prompted by its appearance last year in Swordfish, the blockbuster movie starring John Travolta," the story said.
The boutique carmaker hopes to have a U.S. distribution agreement in place by the middle of next year, the story said.

I thought I wanted a TVR for a while, but I concluded it was mostly because I couldn't get one.
I think TVR would get creamed in the US market. We just wouldn't put up with their level of quality, fit and finish.
Besides, if you want a fast, reasonably priced muscle car with a big honkin motor, buy a Z06 (which they can't get in England!)

We can get a Z06 (on import via several importers) but they're about as popular as every other US muscle car that has ever been brought over, ie. I'll be lucky if I ever see one on British roads.
Rightly or Wrongly American cars are still seen as being incapable of cornering at speed, and being left-hand drive means they are difficult to overtake in on our roads (we drive on the other side to you guys). Add the fact that generally speaking they have huge capacity engines (fuel over here costs over twice what it does in the US) and the market here is limited to a few enthusiasts. Much as America sees the British sports car industry as poorly made MG's and TR's with dodgy Lucas electricals, the UK sees American sports cars as gas-guzzling monsters only good for the 1/4 mile drag and hopeless round corners.
In both cases, the perception is based on an outdated idea, but is still the perception of a lot of people.
TVR fit and finish has come a long way in the last few years, their quality control is a lot better than their reputation suggests too. Even in the UK they have a reputation for unreliability but I know several owners of recent cars who have had no problems whatsoever. In fact I know more S2000 owners who've had problems with their cars.
If you were to get TVR, the most likely car you would get would be the Tamora which has the dimensions and weight of the S2000 but with a 350bhp, 290lb/ft V6 engine, don't tell me thats not tempting?
