Well the upside is that you'll be getting a car with much better gas mileage. And with the price of gas per gallon right now, I think it's a very smart trade.
This is the "spend thousands to save hundreds" argument - you have to be careful when you look at costs. Sure a Fit hybrid will save you on gas at each fill up, but you aren't saving money if you spend a lot for the car in the first place. A new Fit has an initial outlay, depreciation, and some other costs, while a ten-yr old car is basically free.

would appreciate your thoughts.

besides the s2k, the DD is a 99TL with nav. it gets ok mileage, but is extremely not fun to drive. would it be "dumb" to trade it plus lots of cash for the new honda fit hybrid coming out next yr?
IMO, yeah, it would be "dumb."

I'd drive the S more and keep the TL for the bad weather commutes. Or just sell the TL altogether if you loathe it and DD the S.

It sounds like you want to sell it because it's boring, not because it would be the best financial decision. Asking "is it dumb" is asking for the financial side of the picture only, but that's not your only real trade off.

You have to make a value judgement. And it needs to be based on your value system, not mine, for the advice to be good advice to you.

"... Honda also plans to introduce another unique small hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z sports car first shown at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show as well as a Fit hybrid model. Including the Civic Hybrid, these four hybrid vehicles are expected to reach combined annual global sales of approximately 500,000 units."

from my post:

BTW hybrid fit 2010: again from Mr. Honda himself.

"But perhaps of most interest is confirmation by Fukui that Honda will add a hybrid version of its Fit hatchback in the early 2010s. The Fit is already the most fuel-efficient model in its class, according U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data, so until now the added cost and weight of a hybrid system would likely have outweighed the benefits. However, according to Fukui, with the cost of oil over $130 a barrel and probably heading upward, "a Fit hybrid now makes sense."

Money wise it's 3-4 times cheaper to keep the TL. In fact you should keep the TL until it's at least 15 years old if you are trying to maximize your $$ assuming the main components hold up.

You would not be 'saving money' by buying any new car unless your current car gets 10-12 mpg and you drive way more than average. Every new car loses 2-4k the day you drive it off the lot. That's a couple years of gas right there. Add in the continued faster depreciation and you haven't even glanced at the higher payments, insurance, or capital costs.
