Toyota's 2007 vision as top automaker

[QUOTE=no_really,Dec 31 2006, 05:16 PM]kumainu, the board at Toyota has to be willing to take risks before they will spend the money to build another car like the Supra.

creating a small team for a purposely built car is nothing new. every great business has some form of specialty group and toyota is no different. do you honestly think toyota doesn't have enthusiasts within their engineering and development dept?
you might not like lexus which is fine but in less than 2 years there will be more performance cars available at toyota and lexus vs honda and acura.

Making claims about what will happen down the road is well and good, but you can't point to what hasn't happened yet as any proof of greatness.

The best car I ever owned was a Toyota. 1991 MR2 turbo. Loved it every time I drove it.
It has now been totally riced out by some local kid.
In my neighborhood (which I don't know how typical it is but call it upper middle class) out of about 200 houses there are roughly 3 sports cars. There are a ton of the "boring" toyotas. And when someone who owns a sports car needs something for a daily driver and grocery getter, more often than not a Toyota product makes the shopping list.
For those who don't take them seriously, how long from the launch of Lexus did it take for them to be considered top notch and leave Lincoln and Caddy in the dust? 10 years? And they keep SURGING forward.
If they build a Supra, I'll swing by the dealer.

You can diss on Toyota for being "boring" all you want, but because of it, they are now in a position to own the automotive world. Then in the near future, they will be tired of your "criticism" and dump a gazillion dollars into building sports cars and futuristic cars just to shut you up. Seriously, with money, anything is possible. They can financially support engineers, facilities, R&D, etc. to build anything they'd like. So far, they're too busy enjoying their success. Who knows, in the near future, they may disprove all by producing wonderful sports cars (it's not like they've never had a sports car in the past).
If they wanted...they could probably pay some engineers to create a roadster better and more reliable than our beloved s2000's. But that's beyond the point...Toyota pays every single one of their employee's VERY well. Even from the bottom up. They hire many American's to work for them. And they make incredibly bulletproof cars. Sure they could use a little spice in the Toyota line-up...but Lexus and Scion does an okay job at adding a little flavor into the mix.
Btw, in 10 years, expect them to have the autoworld in a chokehold. They will cover all the bases, and make damn good cars. They make sure quality is top notch, and they will be loaded with cash. They'd be able to buy any designer and engineer dead or alive.

There was a blurb on the G4 "Attack of the Show" news crawl the other day that said Toyota will be slowing production of the Scion brand. But the reason was not slow sales, it was that sales were so brisk they were worried about the "cool" factor wearing off by them getting to common. Kind of an odd strategy compared to other automakers, but I can't argue with them so far.

New Malibu definitely looks better inside and out. The question is, will the interior really be as nice as the photos? The Saturn Aura was a big disappointment (to me, and many others) when comparing the interior (in real life) to what was shown in photos.
I see a lot of TL lines in the car, with some Camry/Avalon thrown in. Definitely not bad looking.
