If it's high teens I think its a pretty good car actually. I just can't fathom how they could make money at that price point.

Who said it needs to be a dedicated RWD platform? I just want something that is cheap and fun to drive... I don't think it's that hard, I just think there is no market for this car in america. We ask for too many features for too little money.

Goddamn man, are you intentionally argumentative just for the sake of it?
Toyota currently has no platform on which to build a 2100 lb RWD coupe. Thus they would need a new platform. I.e. a dedicated platform. Sure we (the enthusiasts) don't require a dedicated platform for this car, but please explain how else this car could be built?
I'd love to see the next gen (could this happen?) FRS have a platform that is able to be used for a smaller model (like this concept), as well as able to be used for a larger RWD sedan. Would be pretty sweet.

But you are right "Nobody else is doing it, so it must be impossible" is great reasoning. Toyota has been resting on it's laurels so long they don't take chances anymore. They need to kill off the Scion brand in america and bring some fun stuff back to Toyota. A refreshed (and more powerful) FR-S and a cheaper and lighter sports car would be a great start.
But it's not going to happen...

I agree with everything you just said.

Didn't toyota already go through this exercise and called it the mrs?

A few comments from me...
- The rumored price is around $10k for the Japanese market - which is suspiciously low. When you undercut the Miata by 50% my first question is "How?" and "What did they cut out?". I suspect this car may be SUPER stripped down and not all that appealing for American buyers.
- Along the same lines... is this car even coming to the US? Any confirmation?
- I suspect the car would be less ugly in a more normal color.

Not large enough for US DOT spec. I smell 660cc Kei car engine. Power windows optional.
