Toyota reveals S-FR Concept, a Miata fighter

I would buy one, depending on the price. 2100 lbs is a winner in my book, doesn't really matter what it looks like. I had the initial reaction that it was hideous but have warmed up to it since. I think they call it "cheap and cheerful" across the pond. Front mid engine, super low weight, rear wheel drive. It's what you all have been asking for....
It's supposed to be a modern take on the Toyota Sports 800, which tbh, was kind of ugly too but I think they did a pretty good job of re-creating it.

I think they idea is to create something below the FR-S in terms of performance. Lighter and less powerful and hopefully a LOT cheaper... but that last part remains to be seen, as does whether or not we actually get to buy this car, my money is on "no".

If it's high teens I think its a pretty good car actually. I just can't fathom how they could make money at that price point.

The same way all the other companies who make cars at that price point do? I mean, honestly, what is so hard about making a fun cheap car? Plenty of cheap cars out there, why not make em fun...

It reminds me a little of the Toyota Sera.
Also kind of a an ugly car but it is kinda cool in some aspects (I have see one in person and it is interesting). I like the glass roof and the profile isn't terrible. It will be interesting to see how it turns out in real life and not in sponsored by highlighter for the paint.

On a related note, I don't see how Toyota can't build an FRS for ~$23k, since Mazda can build a convertible for $3k less than Toyota's coupe, and convertibles are always more expensive than their hard top versions.

I agree, but Toyota seems incredibly averse to building their own sports cars these days. Wouldn't do it with the affordable FRS and won't do it with the Supra successor (or whatever the Silk Road collaboration with BMW is going to be). Would be odd for them to do it with a very cheap car.
I mean I hope it happens, but the last time they did this was the MR-S, which was still considerably more expensive than what this should cost.
