It really comes down to there are a lot of good cars in the $17K space and most of them are better than the Matrix/Vibe twins in most ways. The Mazda 3, Scion tC and Civic Si are all overall better cars for the same kind of money and it's not hard to choose one to fit your needs as well as or better than a Matrix.

Mini S2000? It's a utility vehicle and not even convertible. They're mid 15 second cars and handle like boats.
In my opinion, everything Toyota has made in the past 5 years or so looks like ass. The Supra and the MR2 were Toyota's last good looking cars (minus Lexus).

Drive a Matrix - The driving position is awful, especially the shifter coming out of the dashboard - Ugh, what was Toyota thinking. The rear suspension (with the good engine) is an econocar twist beam.

Lostwaffle, your name says it all.
On paper a turkey-burger, a waffle and a pancake are all about the same size, the same weight, the same thickness, the same shape and pretty much the same color--and I'm pretty sure that the distance they fly when thrown is about the same....so put an eggo between a couple of buns, add lettuce, catsup, cheese, mayo and pickles and tell me if it tastes the same as a burger.

I test drove an XRS a little over a year ago...it had some power but it handled horribly. It's got some decent looks but nothing worth getting excited about.

I owned a Pontiac Vibe, before it was stolen. It is not a performance machine. However, for a utility hatchback, power, handling, and economy are excellent. Imagine, I could fit three mountain bikes in back, vertically!. Two standard camp sleeping pads fit on the flat floor. I suppose a twin mattress could fit, but I never tried
The interior plastic is cheap, engine is noisy, strange driving position, but the seats are very comfortable. I only paid $14k for base model with power package and 17" wheels. I averaged 33 mpg (lots or roadtrips). The GT / XRS engine works well is lighter vehicles like the Celica and Elise. A better choice would be the 2.4 from the Scion tC and Camry. my .02
