Default Toyota IQ

http://autos.yahoo.com/articles/autos_cont...wN0b3lvdGEtaXE-

Two powerplants will be offered, a 1.0-liter VVT-i gasoline engine and a 1.4-liter D-4D diesel. The 3-cylinder, 12-valve DOHC gasoline engine is rated 67 horsepower, while the 4-cylinder, 8-valve OHC common rail turbocharged diesel produces 88 horsepower. A new 1.3-liter dual VVT-i gasoline engine with stop-and-start technology will be available later in 2009.

The 1.0-liter engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission with a Multidrive continuously variable transmission optional, while the diesel engine is mated to a 6-speed manual. The 1.0-liter VVT-i manual version gets an estimated 56 mpg fuel economy overall, while the diesel variant has an overall fuel economy of 57 mpg.

I never understood why the smart car barely got 30mpg around town. Overall it's no better than a corolla. The IQ gets better gas mileage than most motorcycles though.

I thought the same thing originally but those figures are roughly equal to the civics of just 15 years ago, and the civics were heavier with poorer gearing and aeros. I bet the 1.4 diesel isn't bad with 90hp and good tq.

Toyota should be able to sell a ton of these in Europe and Asia, where they like small cars much more than Americans and small cars are more compatible with their streets.

I would think the diesel will move out pretty well. Neat little car, I hope they bring it here. Smart Cars are sure selling in the US so I see no reason this wouldn't as well.

Are those mpg's on the European Cycle? If so, it could be a bit lower.
