the lead engineer was quoted in Automotive News as saying the FT-86’s special paint is the “traditional red color of a Japanese monkey’s backside.”

[QUOTE=DaPhatty,Oct 6 2009, 02:41 PM]I'm certainly intrigued but there is still a lot of info that needs to be revealed.

Looks great but the real question is; will it make it to the US. If it's anything like every other car that comes out worth a bucket of piss we will never see it this side of the pond.

I agree with you in general (that cars are getting bulky and bulbous), I actually think that car looks pretty damn good side by side with an S2000 considering that it's a 2+2 hatch.

Look at the low-sloping hood -- that's very S2000-like, and I'm sure the Toyota doesn't have the luxury of putting the engine so far back like ours is. I think this is one of the advantages of the Subie boxer engine -- it's pretty flat so you can get a low hood and a low CG.

Then I think the rest of the bulk vs. the S2000 is just the fact that it's a 2+2 hatchback (roofline sweeps all the way to the back and has to stay a bit high for the back seat passengers). I'd like to see a to-scale comparison of the Toyota next to, say, a Genesis coupe. I bet it will make the Hyundai look like a whale.

If they get the price point right and it's around 2800 pounds, this will be the next autocross track star after the Miata and S2000. Compact, low-CG, RWD, and with an engine with huge potential.
I agree with you but I think what really sets the S2000 apart from the rest is that long protruding front end from the front windshield/cabin. It really makes it look slim. I hope they change the front bumper for the final model of the FT-86 too. I really like the idea behind it but the design isn't really doing it for me. I like the CR-Z better for some reason. I'm all for an affordable/RWD/lightweight car though.

I hate to keep filling this thread up with images but this time I want to use the RX-8 as an example. I think the Mazda looks much nicer than this FT-86 concept for the same reasons. It's a 4 door (coupe?) and looks even nicer to me. The front protrudes a little more and the sides of the car don't hang so low. It just looks tighter and more slim.

Just release this car just like that with a respectable engine and a real Supra update and just like that I think Toyota has a good lineup. Bring customers in with this and some new Supra real sports car and have families leave with a Camry.

Their timing seems perfect if they announce now, and when these finally come out the world economy should be coming back to life.

People were still buying slow Civics because a Civic actually looked nice and had the Honda reliability. You don't need an STi or Evo beater with this car. Was the original 86 viewed as a sports car??
