Agree that 2-door versions of 4-doors aren't much if any lighter-weight.
But it doesn't appear that this is going to be a 2-door Impreza, but rather it looks like a completely different car with the same (or similar) boxer engine. Toyota has generally been pretty good about keeping the weight down. I'm guessing 3000 lb. MAX, 2600 lb. min, *hopefully* they'll manage to split that at ~2800 lb.

Frankly, I dunno if 3000 is going to do it for me...
We'll have to see. I remember reading that this car is going to be based on a modified impreza chassis since it wil be a shared platform between the two makes. It may spell trouble in terms of weight but it will help with keeping prices low since dedicated chassis=big bucks. Considering how much people swoon over how BMWs handle (even in non M form) and how heavy they actually are, keeping this car around 3000lbs should be doable. The MS3/GTI/Cobalt SS/Civic SI all range from about 2900 (civic) to just north of 3100 (MS3 and GTI), and people here praise their driving dynamics, so if this car is around or south of 3000lbs with rwd appealing directly to enthusiasts, car should perform nicely.
Reading the dimensions, it seems highly likely that it should come in below 3000lbs. If toyota plans to keep producing this car, they'll make it as light as possible, the gen coupe is only a couple hundred pounds heavier with a V6 and Nissan has been murmuring about a silvia replacement for years, and if it's heavy why not just get an awd wrx (32xx) or ralliart evo (34xx)?

It's on the first page of results in a google image search for "s2000 hardtop" with a caption "Name this hardtop"

The lines are very similar to this new Toyota

Maybe I misssed something, but what I read into it (at a quick glance) is that they're just using Subie engines, not producing w/ Subie as was orignally planned. It just wouldn't be a Subie w/ rwd!

The boxer engine produces a lower cg for better handling/lower hoodline, and produces a unique, cool sound.

I love it!
What i'm really surprised about is the using of a Subaru motor. If this is a Toyota design why bother putting a subaru motor in it? Toyota can only make 200HP motors that are at least 3 liters and 6 cylinders? I just don't get that part.

Overall, I like the concept, but I think it's going to be a pretty good sized disappointment. The base model will weigh at least 3200lbs and with 200 HP...that is very unexciting. I'm not holding my breath on this one.

edit: i just read on this thread that toyota and subaru are both producing the car and will be releasing a version each like the matrix and vibe. I guess the subie one will only be AWD. I can't see them ever making a RWD car.

What makes you think this car would weigh anywhere near 3200lbs? This concept is smaller dimensionally than the last gen Toyota Celica, which only weighed 2500lbs. And 2500lbs was the target weight previously thrown around by Toyota sources.

I don't have any insider info or anything. It's just my wild assed guess at this point. I just don't see it coming in lighter then 3000lbs and probably more around 3200. I am hopeful it will be less.

But that was 10 years ago and it wasnt RWD. For whatever reason FWD is almost always slightly lighter.
