Very cool image:
Now, even with them lined up on the same wheelbase, note that the Toyota's hoodline is WAY WAY lower than the GT-R's.
But NOW consider that the FT86 will actually be on a 9% smaller wheelbase (101" vs. GT-R at 110"), and will be 10% shorter (50" vs. 55"), so basically what we're seeing here drastically UNDERSTATES what the real size difference will be.
Excellent...

dimensions for the FT-86 are: 163.78 inches long and 69.29 inches wide, 49.6 inches high with a wheelbase of 101.18 inches. By comparison:
Genesis Coupe
Wheelbase 111.0 in (2819 mm)
Length 182.3 in (4630 mm)
Width 73.4 in (1864 mm)
Height 54.3 in (1379 mm)
curb weight(v6) 3,389 lb (1,537 kg)
7th gen Celica
Wheelbase 102.4 in (2601 mm)
Length 170.5 in (4331 mm)
Width 68.3 in (1735 mm)
Height 51.4 in (1306 mm)
Curb weight 2,425 lb (1,100 kg)
s2k
Wheelbase 94.5 in (2,400 mm)
Length 162.7 in (4,133 mm)
Width 68.9 in (1,750 mm)
Height 50.0 in (1,270 mm)
Curb weight 2,801 lb (1,271 kg)
NC miata
Wheelbase 91.7 in (2,330 mm)
Length 157.3 in (4,000 mm)
Width 67.7 in (1,720 mm)
Height 49.0 in (1,240 mm)
Curb weight 2,410 lb (1,095 kg)
So the FT-86 is actually shorter than the 7th gen Celica by almost 7 inches, just a smidge longer and wider than the s2k. With crash safety regulations increasing every year, I doubt that the FT-86 would be lighter than the Celica but hopefully 2600-2800 lb is doable.

If they could keep it under 3000lbs, that would indeed be a miracle.
As far as the tuner crowd stuff goes, now that I had time to think about it, they tuner crowd already has the ms3, GTI, and wrxs to choose from, yet they're not flocking there just yet. The sport compact craze is pretty much dead, even as popular as the drift scene is, it's still not what it was back in the 90s which imo is a great thing. Cool thing about newer cars though is that they are harder to steal which will help with insurance premiums, and as long as you keep your record clean you should be ok. The S2000 is amongst the most expensive cars to insure, this car can't be any worse.

Agree that 2-door versions of 4-doors aren't much if any lighter-weight.
But it doesn't appear that this is going to be a 2-door Impreza, but rather it looks like a completely different car with the same (or similar) boxer engine. Toyota has generally been pretty good about keeping the weight down. I'm guessing 3000 lb. MAX, 2600 lb. min, *hopefully* they'll manage to split that at ~2800 lb.
Frankly, I dunno if 3000 is going to do it for me...

I think the Mazda looks much nicer than this FT-86 concept for the same reasons. It's a 4 door (coupe?) and looks even nicer to me. The front protrudes a little more and the sides of the car don't hang so low. It just looks tighter and more slim.

Great vid!! So cool how well then can render these days, that was as good as seeing the real thing. However, they got the engine sound all wrong... that was in I4, no Suby boxer rumble found.
