-> The new [GE] STI was a failure since the new Impreza debuted. The only part in the world that the new STI excelled is in JDM-land, in which their STI is still powered by the legendary EJ207 engine and at the same time performed better than the Evo X at Tsukuba by Best Motoring. While the rest of the world adapted the lazy EJ257 from the USDM market and proved to be a lackluster performer. Plus the hatchback body I've been longing for was a huge failure.
-> The TG test was a little bit unfair thou. Jezza (Clarkson) tested the Ralliart-engineered FQ-360, in which it can do a AWD drift 'round the STI easily. They should have tested the FQ-300 from the start and kept it that way, not when they handed the keys to the Stig.
-> I'm waiting for the Evo X Sportback, that is the end of the STI, Caliber SRT-4, HHR SS, VW R32, and Mazdaspeed 3 for sure.

-> ...
^ How it can be ugly? And take note, this is only a ES/GTS/Ralliart/GSR model without the much agressive widebody Evo stance.
-> I'll be waiting for the outcome of the Evo version.

I'd be torn if I had to choose between the two.
Both look great to me on the outside. I hate the Imprezza/WRX, but the enhancements to the STi totally transform it IMO. Additionally, I like the body style, b/c it would be easy to haul bicycles and other big items.
The STi is prob. easier to live w/, but if my impressions of the prior gen Evo vs. STi carry on, I'd def. enjoy driving the Evo more (for fun, not daily driving).
I suspect I'd end up w/ the STi due to the added practicality, nicer interior, and better dealer/warranty support.
