The car has no turbo lag and if the car he drove was lagging then it was not running correctly or something was wrong with it...especially if he thought the E46 M3 was quick in comparison. Although they are close in numbers the 335 feels much quicker due to the huge torque advantage.
If the TWO 335i's I drove were both experiencing problems off the lot, then I DEFINITELY do not want to own one.

I never said the E46 M3 was "quick in comparison". I said the NEW M3 was quick in comparison, but the E46 is a steal right now and I can't justify the price difference for a daily driver.

I also drove the new V8 M3, which while I found it to be exiting, didn't live up to the hype I have been hearing... and just for good measure I drove an E46 M3. I WILL be purchasing the latter of these two as soon as I can find a nice deal. The acceleration of this car was simply astounding. While F/I can be great, these two cars offer a sensation that you just can't get with boost. The acceleration from a roll is instantaneous. It is just piss-in-your-pants-good!

You're right...you said 'the accleration of this car was simply astounding'. The E46 M3 is a great car and I love the high revving nature of the S54. Keep in mind that maintenance will be substantially more for an M...the inspection ('recommended' every 30K miles) run $1,500-2K. The 335 is a better daily driver as it's more comfortable and get much better gas mileage. I get better than 30mpg on the highway on the 335 and low 20's on the highway on the M. The ride in the M is much stiffer and the seats aren't as nice as the 335. To each his own...both are great cars but you would be in a vast minority to think that the 335 is a car with any lag.

Thanks for the info. I will take it into consideration.

I will never pay someone to do an inspection. I do all of my own work anyway. I've put roughly 183,000 miles between 2 S2000's and never paid someone to do maintenance or repairs. I don't doubt that the 335 would be a better daily driver, but I'm not too worried about gas milage these days. I'm hoping that the M will suit my needs fairly well.

The Inspection services on the M's generally includes a valve adjustment among other things and I doubt very many of could perform a valve adjustment on the double vanos equipped E46 M3. It's a pain in the ass and requires a relatively expensive tool. The M3 was a great DD for me for it's first few years and definitely offers a great blend of performance and luxury. If the ride isn't too rough for you then you shouldn't have any other concerns. My M has been trouble free for over 80K miles.
