Don't know if your stuck on the Hatchback and the look of the Matrix but I went to the auto show yesterday and the Scion TC is looking better everyday..... (even though it looks like a hyundai from a distance)

They hold quite a bit, and people tell me they're fun. I've never driven one myself, but I'd probably get one as a beater too.
Basically, you could do a lot worse for a beater car IMO.

Thinking of replacing the 91 camry with a 2003 Matrix XRS or XR 4WD any opinions?

from what ive read, the engine used in the XRS (zz-something, same as in Corolla XRS and Celica GT-S) aint adapted too well to the Matrix
As for the AWD version, I understand it's lacking in hp to have the extra drivetrain
An Impreza does the job better, as long as the engine is bigger than the 1.8 from a few years ago.

Speed and performance isn't the big issue(s2k does those things), remember its replacing a 91 camry! Main uses will be commuter, some local snowboarding trips, and not getting stuck in a snow storm.
