thoughts on the pontiac solstice

Both the Solstice and Sky are very nice looking roadsters, but I still prefer theS2000. Also, w/ a price tag under $20k, there will be a swarm of Solstice and Sky when it comes out, just like the miata and the MR-S!! I see them everyday whenever I go for a drive.

I don't think 3200 pounds would be deadly.
The Solstice isn't really aimed at the relatively small premium roadster market; it's aimed at the more general market that the Miata occupies. With 170 hp, it should be performance competitive with the new Miata even if it seems heavy to us.
There are plenty of people who can't fit comfortably into a Miata, especially in middle America. This car gives those people a choice if they want a roadster.
If larger people like roadsters as much as thinner people, this car should be a big hit. If, on the other hand, the attraction of having a drop top is to show off how fit you look and how svelte your girlfriend or wife is, it may flop.
I think it's an interesting experiment.

Enough with the totally random weight rumor already. The nearly identical Saturn Sky weighs 2860 lbs.: http://www.saturn.com/saturn/showroom/futu...es/sky_spec.pdf
There's no way in hell the Solstice will weigh 3200 lbs.

and this is the quote from c&d
The Solstice is remarkably faithful to the cleanly styled concept. There are only a few small concessions to production realities. For example, the slender metal door handles of the concept give way to unexceptional ones supplied by GM's Italian affiliate, Fiat. The production car is also slightly bigger than the concept. It's five inches taller and almost four inches longer but rides on the same 95.1-inch wheelbase as the concept. The front and rear overhangs were lengthened to meet crash standards. Predictably, the production version is also heavier than the concept. The concept was an estimated 2860 pounds; the real-world roadster is about 350 pounds heftier.

The new Miata looks better and will perform better. Neither is a threat to the S2000. However kudos to GM for adding more cars in the roadster category.

I think it's great to have more choices. Whats not to like?
However my money is on the Miata. The new Miata (sorry MX-5) will have 160-170hp (NA) and weigh 2500-2600 lbs (I think). Now if I can fit in the Miata thats another story.
Bottom line, GM has become Hyundai. What I mean is GM has to sell on low price first and foremost.
BTW I see C&D saying in all their reviews of GM products "don't worry about MSRP b/c GMs always take off a few thousand for give backs"
