Default Thoughts on the MR2?

Hey, I've started to look into some other cars for a fun and fast car that can handle on par with the S2000. I've found a very heavily modified 1993 MR2 (all suspension upgrades, roll cage, braces, some extra power, the normal needs for a good trackday car) and I'm wondering what you guys think of the car.

Are they reliable?
What are their weakpoints (as far as driveline or handling/driveability)?
How do they handle compared to an S2000?

I plan on getting in one to take a drive, but unfortunately I'll only be able to drive an NA one. I'd like to know what to expect and whether it's even worth pursuing this instead of an S2000 for my next car.

The money would be about the same whether I get an S2000 or this.

Thanks for any input!

not sure how a 93 mr2 can cost as much as a S2000. a 13 yr old mr2 should be worth ~$4k or $5K

Maybe I'm missing something, is this mr2 made out of diamonds and gold?

$25,000+ in mods/work done to a car that cost around $6k. Price would be around $16k for it. The car is insane, holds a lot of records in the MR2 community and still hasn't been pushed to it's potential (running a stock turbo variant on a built engine, for now).

Ok, forget about price being an issue. I don't want reviews on your perceived value of the car, I just put the "price is no concern" comment in there to prevent people from pointing out the obvious difference in stock vs stock pricing on the cars.

If anyone has some insight on my questions, I would be very appreciative if they would respond. Thanks to the people bringing up the value issue, but right now, I'm not considering what car is a better value, just their respective strengths and weaknesses and the comparison between them.

go read sport compacts car issue which came out in sept or oct, they did a top ten list of cars under 10k. there was a nice 1 page summary of weaknessses and benefits of a mr2.

Or one that is modded so heavily. You never know how well or not so well it was done.

I'd driven a '92 MR turbo once and it was pretty great. It handled the way a somewhat light mid-engined car is supposed to, which was great, but not as precise or agile as the S2000. I have no idea about the engine's reliability or modding potential. Looks-wise, it kinda looks like a mini Ferrari.

When you know the guy, you do. Like I said before, leave the cost issue alone. The car is extremely well done, which is why it is worth more than most modified cars. It isn't a hackjob with a CAI and an exhaust with neon lights in the interior.

Thanks for the info so far guys! I'll see if I can get ahold of that guy...
