IMHO a small wagon is fine if you don't take many 3+ hour trips or wknd trips. However, you would quickly run out of space in a 3 series if you were going for a wknd trip to grandma's. For wknd trips - you will need travel crib, big stroller, toy bag, daiper/clothes bag and ofcourse your own luggage.
We make 3-hour trips down to the beachhouse in Rockport to stay the weekend all of the time, and we always have plenty of room in our A6, a mid-size sedan.
And, yes, that includes pack-n-play, BOB stroller, luggage, etc., etc.
We are constantly amazed at the amount of trunk space in the A6.
