Default thinking of getting a Datsun 240z

Well i have been driving the S more and more since i have gotten up here for school, i would say about 1400 miles per month. i dont want to put that many miles on the car so i was thinking about getting a second car, something cheap, and something i can daily drive, except on special sunny days. I have always been a big fan of the 240z. well what i was thinking getting the 240z and daily driving it until this summer when i go to live back home, i have a spot inbetween 2 of our barns that has pavement laid down were i can work on the 240. i want to swap either a Rb25det or a Rb26dett into it. i have done swaps before and im pretty sure im up to it. but with me waiting until then i will have plenty of time to get my funds together for the swap. and i can find a 240z for cheap in my area, so thats a great plus!

waht i was wondering does anyone have any experience with the 240z's? how does anyone think they will be good on daily driving?

thanks guys!

such a cool car, but I think realistically if I owned a newer S2000 and a 240z with a swap of some kind I would daily the S2000 and drive the 240 on special days, its becoming harder and harder to find good ones.

the rb swap is costly, fortunately there are swap kits out. The l28et is a plug and play swap. But yeah, rust and a lot of scrubbing comes to mind.

i definatly know about the rust. but if its on certain panels i could just cut the panel and reweld a new one in, and prime it correct? and if there is some rust on the frame/ underside of the car, i shouldnt get that one? even if ther is just a little surface rust?

Be weary about rust on the early Z cars, as it can be ridiculous sometimes. If you do find one, try and find a good example, obviously. They are great cars; very reliable.

There will be some days in which you will have to tinker with the Carburetors, but nothing serious.

I'd daily one of those problem is finding one not rotted out, be prepared to spend 5k+ for one with no rust and in good running condition (probably 2k for a clean rolling chassis) then another 5-7k swapping a rb26dett. Personally I'd swap a lsx or vq35 in there, reliable NA power and readily available parts not like the outdated RB engine. You need to go check out www.hybridz.org I almost bought one myself but decided not to right now, someday I will own one though I'm a nissan/datsun guy at heart those early z's are probably my favorite classic car

In regards to body panels like fenders and such, yes, you'd have to cut, weld, bondo, sand/block, and prime. A lot of work, dunno what your skill set is but waaaaaaay above my head at the moment. Frames can be done the same way as well, but when it's all said if you have to get into it that much, you're not going to want to daily it.
