be sure to check out www.bethaniagarage.com for hard dog roll bars and cages. they are super well made and are perfect fits for the M1. i had a dbl diag sport bar that saved my cookies in a serious wreck.

If he is trying to decide between a spec miata and a turbo, try to push him in the turbo direction. Spec miatas arent too fast because they have a min weight limit. A nicely set up turbo'd miata, however, can be extremely fast while still being street legal. I have ridden in and driven a few FMI and FMII miatas and they are a blast. Not nearly as stiff as an S, but very tossable, nicely balanced, and more power than you would care to have in a car of that weight (one of them was putting down around 260rwhp).
