Thinking of building a track miata- HELP!
Hey guys, a friend of mine is planning on buying a miata to build as a track car. He is looking for a 94-97. Do you guys know of any issues, trouble spots to look for in these miatas.
any info or links would be appreciated.
TIA

It's just www.miataforum.com - no "s" at the end of forum.
Both are a great source of info.
No real trouble spots on the 94-97. They've got the updated interior, the bigger 1.8L engine, and all the chassis braces.
1994 has a real oil pressure gauge (unlike the "low pressure high pressure" on-off switch type used in the later models) and uses OBD I making problems easy to diagnose without a code reader.
Other than that not much changed until the redesign in 1999.

94 to 97 would all be good years. I'd opt for a 94 since it's the lightest while still having all the braces. The 1.8 from those years is a 9:1 CR motor, so great for boost if he's not building it as a Spec Miata.

What kind of track car? Spec Miata or just open class for fun?
You're probably gonna replace most everything on the car in some way, so as long as it's straight and has decent compression, I'd take the cheapest thing I could find. I'd go for a 94 for the aforementioned reasons, and it'll probably be the cheapest, but try to find one with a Torsen LSD if you can. Used ones run ~$500-700 or you can get a new clutch type for about the same.

He is going to his first HPDE with me this wknd. However, he seriously has got the track bug. He plans on getting a miata within a month, and modding it for track use. I think over time he will decide if he wants to make it a spec miata or a turbo miata.
thanks for the links
