I would buy the new 8200rpm redline GT3 before I would buy an AWD (not very fun) Turbo. A GT2 is very sweet, but at $180k, I would rather have the 360 Modena F1 if for no other reason than looks and pimp factor.

Okay, I agree that 'stomp' is too strong of a word. Both cars with equal drivers are very even on a roadcourse or 1/4 mile strip. That just exacerbates the huge value equation with the Z06.
One thing I will disagree with is that a stock 911 is not as fast as a stock six-speed C5 Coupe. I love how people think that a Z06 is SO MUCH faster than a Coupe/Vert, but that just isn't the case. A well-driven Coupe six-speed will trap 109-110mph easy. A Z06 will trap 115+mph which is a noticeable difference, but not night and day. Also, NO 911 six-speed rated 320hp or less will come close to trapping 110mph in the 1/4 mile. They're 105-106mph at best cars. Which just happens to be the difference between a Coupe and Z06 C5.
I can understand your reasoning on getting a 911, they really are great cars and with leases, they can be had for a decent monthly payment. I wouldn't HATE to drive a 911, that's for sure. But, when I am PURCHASING a car, I don't see the value equation with a Porsche over a Corvette because it's just not there for me. $20,000 of difference is a significant sum for me as I don't have a HUGE trust and I actually work for a living at 26 years old, out of college for about 3 years.
Down, the road, when $20-40k isn't that big of a deal, I might buy a GT3 or something along those lines for the different 'feel.' Then again, if the C6 is as good as it's looking to be, it might make the Porsche irrelevant to all but the most jaded German enthusiasts. There will be no more bitching about interior quality with the C6 and the C6 Z06 will have SRT-10 levels of performance with greater refinement at a lower price.

Steve, I meant the GT2, not GT3. Not that I would throw the GT3 out of bed...
I don't suggest going into the "value" part of the equation since it is quicksand. You can compare the 911 T, GTS, Z06, Cobra, Evo down a sliding cost versus benefit scale but if that's what floats your boat you'll get nutty because the scale never ends.
I can take an old 5.0 Mustang and crush almost any car in the 1/4 for less cost than ANY of the cars mentioned above. For even better values check out Grassroots Motorsports challenges. Aren't they up to a whole $2K now? And the drag race winner runs 12's?
I suppose you could stick to new cars in stock condition only. But then you can't choose, say, a Supra or RX7TT. There are plenty of out-of-production cars that are classics forever. But "value" means comparing new prices to used. Not fair I say.
There's intangible factors, like style, that shouldn't be downplayed. You can find people who don't care for your favorite car, whatever that car is. I like the 911 silhouette but Porsche interiors have always been too spartan for me. Just like MBZ's have always driven too "heavy" for me.
As far as the Z06 being 'much more' than the S in acceleration, I'd have to say a whole second in the 1/4, and more than that in 0-60, is 'much more' to me. I'll say it again, the Z is a predatory beast on the street.

I am surprised that alot of people who have driven Porsche's still think they are overrated. I have alot of seat time in a Carrera 2 and if I had the money I would take it over a Z06 anyday, though I have seen ONE Z06 beat a Carrera at Motorsports Ranch, but usually the 911's are faster.
And as for the GT3, I spent all day yesterday in one and they are incredible, by far the best "driver's car" I have ever driven. You actually feel when cutting the wheel that the car pivots around a point just behind the rear seats. It is indescribably better than the C2 with H&R coilovers I am used to driving.

XJBayloar,
You are MORE than welcome to bring ANY 996 save for a GT2 or GT3, heck, bring a GT3 out to MSR this coming Saturday and we'll see how it fares against a plain ol' C5 Coupe, not even a Z06.
Sound good?
Note: I am, in no way, insinuating that a C5 is 'better' than a GT3, but it would be interesting to see how one fares as I'm confident in both my and my car's abilities at MSR and any other roadcourse in Texas for that matter.
