Its called 4 DC motors.
Let me make myself clear.
If it had an conventional engine that runs on gasoline, not some electric motor, I'd be all over it.

I would not want a car that takes four hours to fill up with gas.

Many of us do not commute and take trips that vary from short to quite long in areas where it takes planning to find food and gas, no less a recharge station.

I can see paying 50K fo a nice sedan but not one where it is hard to use it for trips between cities and vacation traveling. No doubt that many can use a 'city car' for 90% of their travel, but most don't have the funds to also have a nice 'travel car'.

For me this is another limited market offering just like their sportscar.
You miss the fact that half the country is in a multicar family. Got three for me and the wife, so the car works as a nice high efficiency commuter. Then you have one car thats for utility (SUV or wagon for long trips with the dog and the kiddies) and then the toy.

If you have just one car, it might not be the choice, but just about every new house in the burbs has a three stall garage.

Perhaps. And it might just leave you stranded in January. I'd like to see what there cold weather testing shows if they have done any. My brother has an Prius and my boss has the original Insight (yes I know, different kind of batteries) but they have never had any trouble in the cold and don't seem to have much difference in milage, although they have an engine as a backup.

Its a good point though, because I can't use the S as a backup in the winter.

what use would a "recharging" station be?
Back in the day, we had EV recharging stations in some parking lots here in San Francisco (they're still here). People could recharge their cars while they were at work. The cost was really small. If it cost $4/300 miles, then it would literally only cost cents per a 26 mile commute. With newer technology (and higher demand to push it), they may be able to put a faster version in gas stations. With current technology, a FULL recharge takes 4 hours. That should be much faster with newer technology.

OK, so maybe a trip from SF>LA may still require gas cars, but for MOST Americans, I am confident that EV's 200+ mile capacity is enough.

My average commuting day is less that 30 miles. About ONCE a year I take a trip beyond the base 160 claimed range of this car. And maybe ten times a year I drive about 100 miles in a day, well within the base range of the car.

No. I think it's the same reason why everybody here used to say how the Fit would demolish Ferraris, etc. around the race track.
