The SUV, finally dead.

when i was a kid i got carted around in a cardboard box instead of a baby seat. this inside a tiny Daihatsu or Mazda Familia depending on whether my grandpa was driving or it was my immediate family. No, it was not safe. But compared to my wife's sister who will literally fill up her Honda Pilot with baby crap just to cart around two kids (1.5yrs and 3yrs old)... Do you really NEED that much stuff?

Ok, so if most people agree, (even Ford execs!) that SUV sales, especially full size are not going to go back to where they were then you will have many fewer made. (good call master of the obvious!) But you still have some people who "need" them and others who have so much cash that a $150 tank of gas is no big deal who still buy them.
The question becomes for that group of people, when does the profit from the remaining buyers become small enough that the automakers ignore them entirely? In other words, at $6 agallon does GM stop making Tahoes and Subs all together? Not because nobody is buying them, but because the few who do don't represent enough cashflow to keep that one factory open.

There is no doubt we can roll back the clock to the 1800s if we have to, but it would be nice to find a solution to the energy issue which enables us to maintain an energy intensive lifestyle. However, in my view it needs to be a sustainable and clean alternative.
