Well, I pay money every month for a car one way or the other. For me, the investment is the residual value for the car 3-5 years down the road isn't far off from what I paid for the car. Not looking for the car to make me money...

The "clown shoe." I love them - classic shooting brake design. It doesn't garner much unwanted attention from non-enthusiasts and is an awesome car to drive. If i were looking for a driver's car from BMW, this is it. At around the same price, i'd take it over an E30 M3.
And yes, i stand corrected on production numbers, but the point is essentially the same.

original NSX.
really ultra low mileage CR.
low mileage integra TypeR.
honda s600 or s800.
air cooled 911.
final gen turbo supra.
first gen M3.
BMW 1M.
ALL CARS above WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION. if you buy any of these with an automatic, you might as well burn your cash. " listen to me now and believe me later." hans/franz

I'm going to give you a relatively risky option:
The 996 Turbo.
Pros:
-It can be had in automatic, although that has proven to not help a car retain value most of the time
-Can be had in the 40k range
-Fast
-Stellar build quality
Cons:
-996
-Could depreciate more but demand has gone up as they have gone down in price therefore keeping the price where it's at... generally

^^^996 has the potential to be a collector in the regard that it is the only 911 that does NOT have the circular bug eyes.
My bro has a 996TT - awesome car to drive and with the wide body, still looks good. From a driving dynamics standpoint, Chris Harris has said that it's his favorite turbo - even over the 997.

I have not researched them myself but SakiGT posted in another thread some Tesla roadsters have hit the $50k mark. That might be worth looking into.
