+1 For Civic SI. Focus ST would be fun though too, seen great examples around or just a hair under $20,000. The Civic SI though (2006-2010 body style) can be had for half to two-thirds that.

E39 M5

*Disclaimer* I did not read the first post, but this will sport, will daily drive, and can be had for under 20k. Also, it can reliability and other things too, probably.

Bonus points for a 540i wagon with a 6 speed swap

Everything is a wear item, so it's just maintenance.

Don't go with a Fit. I had to get out of my lease because I couldn't stand the car. Now in a Mk7 GTI and much, much, much happier.

Reliability on the VWs: If you can find a stock example reliability is about as much a concern as any other used sporty 4-door/hatchback. In all honesty if reliability is your #1 priority you'll want to go as late-model as possible, or even new. A new Mazda3 hatchback can be had for around $20k decently equipped, but you'll have the noisy, less-powerful 2.0L. You might be able to find a used 2.5L for cheap.
My girlfriend has a 2012 Mazda3 hatchback. Its a nice car lots of wind noise and poor visibility to the left. Handles awesome but is gutless with the auto trans.
The current model is completely new compared to a 2012.

The new Mazda3 is so ugly...looks like a shoe!

Eh?

Looks are subjectively, but the consensus is it's widely regarded as the best looking compact car you can buy.

Owned one for 6.5 years and 29k, sold last year at 95k. Never left me stranded or went into limp mode. BUT CELs every other month and always little problems or preventive maintenance items to address. Loved the car and it was "reliable" in the sense that it could always get me to work or wherever, but I'm glad I no longer have something to fix all of the time.

Used WRX seems to check off your boxes... maybe even a '09-'14 TSX just hard to find a 6spd... and my final choice would be a Civic Si i suppose

Pretty happy with my current 2013 mazdaspeed3. Even new it was only a few thousand above the 20k mark. It's been super reliable so far.

My other consideration would probably be a civic Si. As I've gotten older and had a kid, not having to tinker with little things really makes a big difference to not have to worry about. But to each their own, just like tastes on which cars look good and which don't.
