Something unique. A car for people that enjoy the simplicity of what a sports car used to be. It is direct, firm, small. Only has what is needed, with a touch of luxury thrown in.
The S2000 is a perfect middleground between something hard-core like the Elise, and something luxo like the Boxster S... all for a lot less money.
Other things from your list. Yes, Z06 is indeed what you described, however... the interior appointments would remind me way too often about the fact that I bought a 45-50k motor and suspension... with some interior thrown into the mix.
Carrera GT....well.. enough said.
I have to say though, the supercar market had gotten very interesting as of late. Each car posseses its own character. They are all VERY different.
- The ENZO is all out. Very much the extreme, as expected in a Ferrari.
- The Porsche is a race car bathed in luxury. It acts like a race car, but its luxurious wiith concept car looks.
- The Ford GT... Well, thats pure American muscle flair in a very tastefully done retro package.
Basically what Im saying is that, more than likely, different people are going to have different impressions about each car based on their preferences.
Case in point. Jay Leno. He has the Carrera GT, SLR, and Ford GT. He didn't get the Enzo because it is paddle shifted and it is something he doesn't like. Im sure he bought all three because they are all SOO different.

From the top:
1) Carerra GT

4) Pagani Zonda
5) Elise
6) Boxster S & GT3 (tie)
8) Gallardo & Murcielago (tie)
10) WRX

A number of lists could be considered for sports cars:
Best performing (track)
Best performing (0-60)
Most affordable
Most reliable
Best looking (subjective)
Most fun-factor (somewhat subjective)
IMO the most useful list would be most bang for the buck. As mentioned previously. The S2k and the Corvette offer a lot for the $ spent. I would also add the Miata to that list.
For GT cars, the Mustang and E46 M3 would be top contenders for most bang for the buck.

What was their criteria? I'd like to read the article, I can't believe the WRX made this list.
A great car, but no s2k or z? Give me a break.
Maybe the definition of "sports car" is changing to some people....
