Wants:
-ALL THE TORQUES
-Convertible
-Good winter driver
-Not too big
-Not too small
-Manual a plus
-Reliable
-Not a "family car"
-Not too expensive
-No lag
-No turbo
-Coupe

Budget:
-$25-35k
Or maybe $25-50k
Or maybe as cheap as possible.
Or maybe one year's salary.

Does not want:
- Civic Si (no torques)
- 370z (too pricey)
- RX8 Turbo (Dad says no)
- Mustang GT (Can't drive it in snow and ice)
- Corvette C5 (Not a work car for the winters here in Indy)
- STI (Too expensive)
- Mazdaspeed3 (hated the car)
- Evo (Too expensive, not reliable, not convertible)
- Accord v6 (Too smooth, too big)
- S4 (too expensive)
- Camaro (Too big)
- 3 series (Too expensive)
- 350Z (No torques!)
- 370Z (Did not like)
- Z4 (Maintenance worries)
- GTO (Too old, not convertible)
- S2000 (No torques!)
- XKR (Not a convertible, maintenance worries)

And here we are.
1. I'm on vacation (the wife and I's 40th) and I almost didn't see this; I can't quit smiling.
2. You are so right; he should just keep his tc with 30k miles on it, and move on.
3. With work issues (year-end just finished with his company), and health issues, and just moved to another apartment, this has been on the back burner.
4. The other day when I was talking to him on the phone (a rare thing), and I mentioned "car," he said, "Oh, I didn't tell you about the car?" I thought for that split-second, that he's had already bought one and didn't include me in the loop, and was just going to bring it over sometime after the fact, just to prove he was a man and was independent!
5. But, of course, he was just pulling my chain; really funny, I enjoyed it.
6. So, when I get back from vacation, school will be starting up, so who knows?
7. The last thing he said was that he needed to go over and drive a convertible Mustang V6, and see if he could deal with the size. He knows he'd have to buy dedicated snows for it, and I'm concerned with the top, whether it is cheap or done well to endure winter's snow and ice.
8. Since he is demanding a 'vert, I'm hoping he might come back around to the S, since it is the perfect size, can handle winter with snows (and I have an extra set!), and there is plenty of support for maintenance (I've had my 04 for 3 yrs. and 45k miles, and only had to do fluids).

2. Life is a good teacher; I can't wait to see when he does buy, which could be years if his accounting part of his brain takes over, and what he buys.
3. Hey, if he waits, and his income doubles in another 5 yrs., he can go for the next level up and skip this level.

I still say C6. Get a $2k Civic with snow tires for the days you need it.

Evo is a bargain. And not reliable? Out of all the cars listed in this thread, the Evo stands with the Vette and Hondas as being a car with ROCK SOLID reliability. Evos are some of the most reliable cars on the road, PERIOD, even with 2x more whp than they come with from the factory. Anyone telling you otherwise is ignorant. I came from Hondas to BMW's to now Evo's so I KNOW what reliability is. There are tons of people out there with 400-550 whp on the stock motor and E85 who have 50-100k miles on their setups on the stock engine. Hell, my car had 96k miles on it when I got it, I drove it for 15k miles with a 370 whp/360 wtq stock turbo E85 setup and beating the shit out of it, no problems whatsoever, stock compression is still strong.

And for the last 5k miles I've driven it at these power levels, on E85, daily, no problems whatsoever:

Just lease the Evo, it doesn't come out to more than buying it if you keep it after the 2 years. I did the numbers on my friend's lease of his 2013 Evo done at $270/mo.

Nice powerband there! Which turbo are you using? Really wish I had e85 available locally! Both my cars would have a ton more power haha.

1. He's not going to lease, and kiss nearly $10k goodbye for a 2 year stint with a car.
2. If he's serious about a 'vert being a deal breaker, he'll miss out on the virtues of an Evo, but I'll send him your info.
3. I look at a car's maintenance in the 2nd 100k, not the first 100k, about any car will hold up for the 1st 100k; resale values tell the truth about what the 2nd 100k will do.
4. Your experience with the cars you have owned is a valuable resource.
5. Since the Evo is built on the Lancer platform, I am surprised to hear they are rated so well; I was going to buy a Lancer in 05 b/c my wife liked the way it felt, but they wanted the same price as a Corolla, so I passed and got yet another boring Corolla, b/c reliability was #1 on my list.

Mazdaspeed3 or Focus ST if he wants the 0-40, 0-50, 0-60 type of fun.

Just saw the thread update. He's gotta pick and choose what he wants the most out of those attributes. There is no one car that fits all of that criteria. It simply does not exist.

TQ without a Turbo, but in a Convertible form that isn't a car that he's already crossed off. - doesn't show up.

Tell him to narrow the list down, and we can help more easily.

...unless they make the G37 Hardtop Convertible in an AWD, that would fit a lot of the criteria.

FWIW the EVO and STi have always been my "one car to do everything" dream cars. Great in winter, tons of power, lots of space, etc, etc.
