so me and my gf looked at a '99 cl
anyways me and my gf went and looked at a '99 acura cl and we both really liked it. (actually it's for her... i drive a 2001 s2k) but if u don't know, it has the 3.0 vtec motor and it's got some get up and go. i don't know the exact name of the color but it's kind of a light blue/turquoise ish color w/ black leather all inside and it's got 133k miles on it. but i have a question... after pulling away from stop signs/red lights etc, when it shifts from 1st to 2nd (auto. 5-spd i believe), it sort of jerks when it shifts. it does that somewhat all through the gears but it shifts somewhat hard from 1st to 2nd. so i was wondering if this was normal or not even though the lady selling it had a receipt to prove she took it to a tranny shop and nothing was proven wrong with it. now we both REALLY like the car except she's a little weary about the tranny part of it. if anyone has any knowledge of this and this type of motor, please inform me as much as possible.
thanks!

ps: does anyone know what rpm vtec would kick in at on this motor? ('99 3.0l vtec)
thanks!

this should be in car talk...
why don't you get on honda-tech and go to their cl / rl / tl section. i'm sure you'd get a better response there. you could probably even do a search and come up with something...

Best thing to do is test drive other CLs (particularly ones in great shape and low miles even if you have no intention of buying, there I said it) so you could compare. When I test drove my S, I had to compare against a few just to make sure the VTEC was kicking in properly and that the tranny feeling was normal.

It very well could develop transmission issues even if the shop you took it to couldn't find any.
The reason I say this is because the transmissions on the V6 accord (1998 - 2002) are known to blow at 100k-150k miles depending on the driver.
And if I remember correctly the CL/TL of in this time period also have the same problem.

Note: I read about these issues in the 6th Gen Accord ('98-'02) section.
Good luck with your decision. It is a very comfortable car! Almost bought a 4 cyl stick - really easy to drive!
P.S. The problem is only with the transmission on the automatic V6. The 4 cyl Accords and CLs don't have any problems.
P.S 2 - There is something called a Dr.Evil Tranny that supposedly fixes the problem. Run a search on the forum I mentioned before.

well it's a '99 cl for sure and i'm almost positive it's the stock tranny seeing as the lady who owns it now bought it at 40k miles and now it's at 133k miles and she hasn't had any diagnosed problems to date... i think it's actually in real good condition and that my gf should get it but i really want details on this tranny everyone's talkin about...
btw: no one has posted on my thread on honda-tech.... so it looks like s owners are my best bet for now but it's ok... i own an s as well

id avoid any honda/acura platform using the j-series motor between 1999 and 2003. the motors are solid but the transmissions that were mated to them were absolute crap. i had a 2002 honda accord and i went through 3 transmissions in the 120,000 miles of ownership ive had it.
