my old 7th gen celica w/ a short shifter felt really precise, but was very stiff. the s2000 is similar but much easier to shift.

haha, I think I stand corrected- thanks for the points guyz, Ill let it get back to gearboxes

I was asking earlier- what about some of the paddle shifter technology and stuff. has anyone done a really good job doing it on a street car? Can that one count as the best gearbox

A T-5 from the Mustangs or a T-56 from the LSX F-bodies/Vettes with the Pro 5.0 shifter.

The Miata transmission is very "notchy". I love it.

I have a short shifter and a super low countersunk shift knob. It feels very similar to the S. They are both Mazda trannys to it's not that hard to imagine.
Aisin, not Mazda, manufactures the gearboxes.

DSG (VW) and Mitsu (SST) have great paddle-shifted gearboxes, per my own experiences.

DCT (BMW) was horrible in the E46 M3 and M5 but the new one in the E92 (?) M3 is supposed to be fantastic (I have yet to drive a new one). PDK (Porsche) is also supposed to be fantastic.

The GT-R transmission is also supposed to be fabulous while the Ferrari transmissions are often regarded as poor in traffic (even the newest ones) and slow-speed driving but awesome when driving quickly. Haven't driven either so I can't comment.
