convertibles are overrated IMO, but then again people shop for different reasons. if a drop top is what you're looking for, Boxster Spyder with its lower weight and better performance focus may be a better bet, but won't be as DD friendly as a Boxster.

I picked Cayman S. I find it rather amusing your budget is $30k to $70k. That's quite a spread.

It`s a spread because essentially, I can buy pretty much anything in that range. I haven`t had a car for over 3 years because I`ve been stationed overseas Japan. Now I`m returning and back in the market.

Just got a big promotion too....

I`m adding Lotus back into the list of possibles. Hoping I can find local dealer support in the Kansas, Leavenworth area and I can survive a 3000 mile road trip to get there....

GTR. Fast, exotic looking, comfortable, modable, but expensive.

Before we get to car choices, let's talk about not pissing away all the money you saved up while being stationed overseas. Buying (or leasing) a nice new car w/ the intent of ditching it in 2 years is financially irrational.

I'd look for a used 987 Boxster S in the high 20's/low 30's.

As for the M3, what makes you so sure you'll even like the next one? The E46 M3 was great, and the E9X is even better. Quite frankly, I wanted the current gen b/c I know it's the first and last V8 M3, and the engine is a gem. The V8 is lighter than the E46 M3's I6, requires less maint., & sounds amazing.

Personally, if you're going to get an M3 in 2 years, just get the cheapest car that will get you by until then. In this case, pick up a Civic Si (used or new). The (depreciation) amount you will lose on most of the cars listed will equal the whole purchase price of the Si. Not to mention it will be a LOT more practical than any of those other cars (except the Accord and G37). Then just keep it as a daily beater after you get the M3.

I commute 100+ miles per day and my daily is a GSR. Pretty fun, zippy and comfortable enough. If I do replace it, it will probably be with an Si sedan.
