How do you remember which gear you're in and what direction you have to shift?

I write it down every time I shift

Ummmm, I don't get it, you don't know what gear you are in???

From first to second you go down and to the right,
From second to third, you go up and to the right.
Etc.

Downshifting is opposite.

If you have a brainfart and you really forget what gear your in, look at the speed and the Rpms, that should clear it right up.

I hope this helps, sorry for the sarcasm, I couldn't help it.

As you get used to the car (same goes for almost any car), you'll notice the subtle nuances that come with it. In this case, if your stick is "up", then you must be in 1st, 3rd or 5th. If your stick is "down", you must be in 2nd, 4th or 6th. After a while, you don't even need to look at your speedo or tach, you know from speed at which the landscape is going by you and the sound of the engine which gear it has to be in. Oh, and if your stick is down and your travelling backwards ????? ........................... you get the picture!

I was stressing to the right for the sarcasm, I mean, c'mon. What kind of question is "how do I know what gear I'm in"

Guys- I think the original poster is not old enough to be driving yet and his question is legitimate.

The answer is that it becomes second nature. Granted, it takes some practice but once you've been doing it a while, you don't even think about it.

A good analogy would be walking. You don't tell yourself put this foot in front of the other and step up for this pothole, etc. You just do it, right? Well, the same thing happens with driving a manual tranny. If you haven't spent some time learning, it might seem daunting but trust me... it's not that big a deal.

Oh, if that is the case, I apologize for my sarcasm. Exactly what Da Hapa said though. It isn't difficult once you have done it for a bit.
