Selling Car Out of State
#12
Three important pieces to a long distance purchase/sale: 1) vehicle 2) money 3) title :
Neither party (buyer or seller) should have all three at one time in a long distance transaction.
As a buyer I did the following:
1) Seller mails me the title and a bill of sale explaining the terms of the sale and that I am to send full payment upon receipt of the title.
2) I wire the money to his account.
3) I arranged for the car to be picked up for delivery.
Neither party has all three important components at any time. I am sure there are ways to be scammed (fake title) but this was the simplest way for each party to have some leverage if there was any problem.

Personally, I would not do a vehicle transaction without both parties and the vehicle present. Especially over the internet or (gasp!) craigslist. Trust issues...
I've done an out of town purchase with a private seller. First I had a PPI done to make sure the car was okay. Then I flew in, looked over the car, and test drove it. Then we headed to the seller's bank, where we handled the Bill of Sale, money and title changed hands. Drove the car home from there...

I've bought 3 cars sight unseen and had them shipped to me. Each car was better than described and/or anticipated. All of the cars were priced as they should be had no stories or details to warrant concern...
