By the fact that the weight is likely going up, and they are keeping the 200hp engine, I'm guessing this will be targeted to the Volkswagen Beetle convertible market, rather than the S2000 market. It's obviously not supposed to be a S2000 replacement.
I don't think it looks terrible, but the proportions aren't roadster, and therefore it doesn't look great. It's got a little Lexus IS-C syndrome, where the size of the rear end combined with the position of the rear wheels make the rear wheels look smaller than the front ones, even if they are the same size.

Really?? A Beetle competitor? the FR-S is still a dedicated RWD chassis that has been reviewed to be one of the best dynamic vehicles on the road. A convertible version won't automatically turn it into some soft, non-dynamic vehicle. Give me a break.
How many of these they make with manuals vs. automatics would be a good indication of what the intended market is. I'm willing to bet they're mostly automatics

Currently about 30/70 auto/manual.
How do you drive your car? Cuz I bet I drive the BRZ harder than you drive your S2k.
In fact, the FRS/BRZ outnumbers teh S2ks at the track at nearly every event I go to. I wouldn't mind having a second drop top, as long as its not ugly like the pics.

Wow calm down there buddy. I think he has made some good points about how the drop top could drastically effect the handling dynamics of the car. It is naive to think that the car will be exactly the same with the drop top as the coupe. I can see this as being more of a cheap GT car and not the knife edge handling car that the coupe is. Also use real words cuz.

one word...awkward!
my opinion...it's a road car, try and run it through a road corse...same with a 350z, 370z, viper, corvette, and mustang you put a tin top vs a convertible a driver will be able to feel the limpness of the chassis...and this? well it's not any different

^^^I think this car is DOA. It makes no sense. Also, any FR-S you see listed for $31k is chock full of dealer installed options. Not really the manufacturer's fault there.
If you have paid any attention, at all, regarding the FA20's engine troubles then you would know all it needs is a different set of air/fuel tables in the ECU, to eliminate the run lean condition that occurs at fast high rpm shifts. In other words, a lightly boosted FA20 with an aftermarket tune will be more reliable than a stock FA20 with an OEM tune.
