Thumbs down S54 M Roadster vs 2003 Boxster S

I regret buying my M Coupe...I love the car a lot but just can't live with a fixed roof over my head.

I absolutely love the S54 engine in my M Coupe, but the handling is, well not very go-kart.

The Boxster S is much more nimble and has better steering feel. The obvious drawback is 55HP...You feel the lack of power for sure, but man can the Boxster S change directions with such natural fluidity and offer great feedback through the steering wheel. wow.

I'm also considering a turbo S2000, but I've already owned 3 and the feedback from the steering wheel and the braking ability are not up to the Boxster S level.
Although 400WHP from a small 2800 pound car with the best gearbox in the world is...tempting...

What do you mean by "Not very, Go-kart"

Ive driven both, the boxter is tighter, but I enjoy a lil oversteer with my sports cars=p

Steering response is very slow.

hmmm, isnt something that really hit me when I drove it, so I cant remember how it was. If you have driven both recently ill take your word for it.

Hard choice. I was in the same position before I bought my rx7.....

The rx7 stole my heart

well, the M-Roadster isnt gonna handle any better than a M-Coupe or offer any more feedback.. infact, the M-Coupe has a significantly stiffer chassis than the Roadster ...

id consider a Boxster S as an upgrade from an M Coupe or Roadster... and the HP difference isnt as big as it seems... The Boxster has less drivetrain loss than the M-Roadster and Porsche's generally seem to perform better than their HP #'s dictate...

also the transmission in the Boxster is more advanced (i believe the older M-Roadster's have a 5-speed), and the Boxster is more aerodynamic...

I think the M coupe is somewhere around 4x as stiff as the M roadster. That doesn't bode well for the M roadster's handling, though I've never driven an M roadster. I have driven a 986 Boxster S and didn't love it. But, it was a relatively short test drive. I thought the S2000 was more fun to drive (and engaging) and bought my second one ('04) instead. I don't particularly like 986 or 996 Porsches a lot, though I love 987s and 997s. I'd drive the 986 Boxster S again and probably decide between that and the S2000.

Assuming you're talking about the E85/E86, the M-roadster is stiffer than the E46 M3 coupe. So while the M-roadster isn't as stiff as the M-coupe (which has twice the torsional rigidity as the M-roadster), it's really no slouch either.

Sounds like you might want to try different tires on your M Coupe before leaping into a new ride?

I really want a convertible, and it's kind of hard to do with a coupe
