Uhh, the point can be seen from this graph.
A stock S52 has more torque at 2.5k RPMs than an F20C has period.
I'd love to see a minivan keep up with an M3 from a light. I'd love to see a minivan keep up with an S2K, much less my E36 328i.
All of that said, I know there's more to engines than torque (I understand the concept of power). Still, you can't deny the Z3 M's torque is much more accessible in DD than the S2K's.

look dude, i'll bring my 4runner and you can bring your cute s52 convertible car. we race from a stop light to the next stop light in downtown seattle and you tell me how you're going to manage to cut me off.
all these engines must be wrung out to truly get into the powerband but from 0-40mph, a lot of cars will surprise the sh!t outta your cute M badged roadster.
unless you got some serious forced induction type or big block american muscle engine... the germans and the japanese who build some nice sports cars... make engines that love to rev and need to be revved for maximum effect.

I personally prefer the S2000 in terms of styling over the Bimmer.
Honestly at this point, buying a used Bimmer just scream: Poser. "I want a nice car, but can't afford it."
Of course, the S screams: Ricer boy. "I want to go fast, but can't."
As a DD, there's more of a chance the S will be reliable. At least parts should cost cheaper.

hmm I would only say S2k because moding will be cheaper, I think, when and if you ever get bored with a stock car.
sounds like you know your stuff though
good luck with your decision

There's a large difference between "from a stoplight" and "from stoplight to stoplight." I'd love to explain how the inability to get a large lead has more to do with a small amount of distance/time more so than a lack of a difference in torque, but I don't think I'd be accomplishing anything by arguing with you.
@Scott: Yes, ideally that'd be nice, but there aren't too many test-drivable Z3M's in my area.
The thing that I'm becoming more worried about with the Z3M is the apparent rear subframe issues they have that BMW refuses to acknowledge and can cost a few grand to fix.

I hadthis choice back in 03, i drove my friend pristine red 30,000 miles perfect z3M roadster...i loved it till i hit a corner, oversteer city, great torque, nice guages and dash setup, bmw style, plastic rear window (never again with that business), great seats and pinash the honda does not have....
that being said i went with the ap2, a 04 car....wonderful car, better choice in terms of expense, depreciation, gas mileage, glass rear window, better seats, the worst stereo , better gearbox, all features standard....i would choose my honda any day of the week, a test drive is what you need for both cars, then you choose...but that bmw sound was wonderfull and the 4 exausts and flared fenders were sweet...so was the badge...i still have no regrets...
you can find a new honda, less miles on it for the same money and you have more of them to choose from, for now.
