The manuals shift very regular. I was happy/satified with manual SLK's I drove over the years.

You can find some really nice condition C5 Corvettes for 20, probably even Z06 models, although that gives up the removal top. If you can get past the interior the cars have a ton of performance to offer for the price, and are great GT cats for longer trips too.

As someone who has come from owning an AP1 years ago, how about a Z4M roadster, or better yet the coupe? The coupes will be a bit more because they're rarer and look better IMO.

I would equate it to an S2000 on steroids. It has the high revving straight 6 with 333HP in a 3100lb car. I've had it for about 5 years and it is very fast, well planted, and stops on a dime. Even though I like the S2000 better (sentimental reasons mainly and that I'm a JDM guy), the Z4M does just about everything better than the S2000.

Z4Ms in good shape can be had between 20-30k. I strongly suggest you check one out.

Not a fan of the SLK or much of any of the MB roadsters period. I might as well get a Chrysler Town and Country. You'll be hard pressed to find a replacement for the S2000 that isn't a S2000. Maybe look into a Cayman S.

I have nothing good to say about SLKs. Other than my personal opinion about their terrible looks, the standard SLK is a fat pig of a small roadster and the 55 AMG is just a overhyped, more powerful fat pig of a small roadster. If you liked how quick and nimble the S2000 was but didn't like how slow it was, then get a boxster S or a Cayman. An SLK is terribly sloppy in comparison.
Thanks, I appreciate your input. I feel pretty confident that I'd love a Cayman, but I'm looking in the <$20k price range. I don't expect to find a Cayman there.

If your dream car is an Elise, why not wait till you find a clean one? My buddy in DC has an Elise S - I much recommenend getting a supercharged model. Sports cars don't get much more pure/uncompromising.

Is the Jeep still gonna be your daily? If so, I'd go with the purer sports car.
It's not that I can't find a *clean* Elise. I just can't find an *affordable* Elise. At this point, I'm not willing to invest >$30k for a weekend toy. The Jeep will (mostly) still be my daily, yes.

Thanks for all the diverse opinions from everyone. If there's one thing I've gathered it's that I really need to test drive some other cars before making a decision.

They have salvaged/rebuilt title Elises for around 25k or so. You just need to find one that was totaled out because of clam damage and not frame damage. Wire wheel sells a bunch of repaired elise for a very reasonable price.

My 2004 S2000 had a perfect top in 2014 when I sold it. Lots of use too.

It's possible to find a Cayman S for $20k. If you're willing to look for a 2006 with 100k miles. One of my porsche buddies picked one up recently.

Also, be aware that the 'base' Cayman wasn't available until the 2007 model year.

The OP could look at Chrysler Crossfire's now that you mention it.

That was based on the SLK platform, but crappier in every way.

Some may like the looks more. There's an SRT version that is "rare". Chrysler dealers charge less than Mercedes dealers for service.
