How about a Z4M Convertible? I don't want to get into another Boxter S vs. Z4M argument again and I know you said no BMW products, but I'm just tossing out suggestions.

He said two years old at max I think. Porsche is the way to go. I drive waaay too damn much to spend 44k on a car with 25,000mi on the clock.

Honestly, I cannot think of a more interesting to drive convertible than the S2000, Boxster S and Elise.

To test drive, in decreasing precedence:
Boxster S
Elise
Corvette
Mustang GT
Viper
Miata (with proper mods - talk to Chris S)
911 S
Audi TT
BMW Z4
Merc SLK
BMW 3/1 series
G37
Audi A5
MINI
Lexus IS C
New Beetle (haha)

Definitely not! In fact, I probably should've said 2-3 years and if there's a major model update I kind of factor that in (or lack of). The 987 is good example, where the 3.4L was introduced in '07, so there's not a huge reason for an '08 other than a newer car (I'd go the one year newer MY if it was a great deal, kind of like my S, I wanted no later than a '06, but my '07 was about the same price).

re: the Z4M

I love how they look, I drove a non-M Z4 and have driven a Z3 based M, fun cars, but having had thee BMWs and not being very dazzled by our local dealer's service (we have two stores, same dealer). The BMW motor is definitely amazing.

If I had never owned a BMW product it would make it more of a front runner, though it's not _totally_ out of the question.

Still the option to move to a totally new brand, a new configuration (I've never owned anything mid-engined) is pretty compelling.

I think the Boxster is the natural progression, if you can get over the 911 snobbery that is.

Have you driven a Boxster yet? Drive a Boxster and a Z4 and you'll forget all about the Z4.

Nice list, I've driven quite a few of those. Interesting to see the Viper, I've driven a handful (though none of the Gen 3.5 cars), and while there's plenty to like, there's something that really turns me off about the car (more relating to the ownership experience vs. the car itself).

987 Boxster S seems like a no-brainer based on your parameters. Go for it, they're great cars.
