It's a hard dilemma, I've owned two different Mazdaspeeds and they were both great cars. The MSM is much lighter and it only takes a few bolt ons to quickly change the horsepower output. Intake, exhaust, upgraded intercooler and set the boost to 10PSI and the car is night and day difference from stock. In the looks department the S2k has it beat any day of the week, but the aftermarket for a Miata in general is much easier on the wallet. Wheels I would immediately change out for 15's/16's as 17's just look wrong and are very heavy for a car that responds greatly to changes in unsprung weight. The S2K's engine is much smoother going through the RPM's and just feels more refined, where you can tell the BP series engine has been relatively left unchanged. I'd honestly like to own both at the same time some day as they are both fun in different aspects it just depends on what you prefer. I would have to agree with whoever said see if you guys could trade for a day or so and see how each of you like the others car.

Reflash a Solstice GXP and you can see 230-250whp and even more torque on stock turbo/fuel system (I think you just need to upgrade a few sensors maybe...from a quick Google search)
And they are in the same price range these days. MSM would be a downgrade if you ask me.

Why are we talking about Solstices again? His options are trade for MSM or keep S2K.
Honestly, MSM is worth more. Both cars are fun. Drive the MSM, decide if you want to trade or not, go on with life.

I have owned two miata's, a 1990 and a 2001. Both tons of fun, although the 2001 had quality issues big time. I traded the miata for my S2000. I would not go back. Having owned both I can say do so if it moves you, not a straight trade, but one with a tad of cash given to you, your car is more valuable and better assuming simular condition.
Good to own both. I drove the mazdaspeed, just not enough car for me after a stock miata, and after driving a couple of S2000's.
Nice choice to have, I would not trade for any money, till i was sick adn tired of my S2000, and I am not after 9 years!

Just gonna repost this.
KBB for MSM: 15,080 excellent (trade in) and 17,145 excellent (private party).
KBB for S2K: 13,650 excellent (trade in) and 15,950 excellent (private party).
MSM is worth at least 1k more.

Because the Solstice is a better car than the MSM, and can be had for roughly the same value as the other two cars being discussed. And it doesn't look like an old Miata.

While I agree that the GXP is a terrific car, there are still plenty of advantages to the NB miata: better shift feel, better interior quality feel, car that comes fully loaded (like the S2000, the MSM came as is, whereas on the solstice there were plenty of options), a trunk that is completely usable with the top up or down (a HUGE shortcoming of the solstice) and finally the miata is a better platform to build off of if you so desired.
There is a reason Miata's have held their values while the solstices' haven't.
At the end of the day though small roadsters come down to intangibles, as someone has already posted, from a price perspective it is DEFINITELY a good trade. However if the S2000 puts a bigger smile on your face then that's the one you should stick with.

It might be worth looking at the price premium of a regular Miata vs the MSM and then extrapolating the extra value. Then, look at the CR as a limited edition S and see what its value increase is worth.
