I know someone selling a mint 05 STi with 23k miles. No stories or issues. This car is clean! Selling for $23k. Just throwing it out there.

I did mention that it was a car I was originally considering to be a potential replacement, but it just doesn't truly appeal to me anymore. There's simply no practicality in that car at all. I do like how it drives, but that's about it.

E46
EVO
STI
Buck up a few more G and 335i
Cayman/Boxster

It's hard to come to the realization that there aren't many cars made that drive and feel like the S2000 does.

I would take my other DD the E36 M3. I would have another $8-13K to spend on upgrades and maintenance.

I agree that it's very difficult to match the fun factor of the S for sub-$20k. The only direct competitors mentioned were Miata and Boxter. There are other fun ideas in this category that haven't been mentioned, probably because nothing will feel right since it's not an S. Here are a few of my personal honorable mentions, BMW Z3 M-Coupe, Solstice/Sky (but turbo versions are expensive).

So given that, then you stray off in other directions. My top choices would also be a C5 vette or an LS2 GTO. I like WRX and EVO but their popularity really kills them for me, I'm sick of hearing about them.

So here are some other honorable mentions, but they all sacrifice a bit of fun for practicality:
Mazdaspeed3, Mazdaspeed6, Subaru Legacy GT, Mini Cooper S (or JCW?)

Then there are a few really great new cars on the market for a little over $20k.
The FRS/BRZ was mentioned, but my new interest is this:

Sounds like you had some fun test driving, I agree with your opinions on the Camaro/Mustang V6. They're great value, 330 hp, 30mpg hwy, low cost. Agreed, Camaro is a really nice car though low slung roof does feel awkward. I prefer it over the Mustang though. Just they're so common on the road, and they have V8 older brothers kill their feel really fast. Never driven a Genesis Coupe, I'd really like to give one a shot because I rarely hear about them, but they have some potential.

OP: I was also in the fairly unique position of considering the S2000, Boss 302 and other cars a month ago. If the 12/13 Boss's are within the reasonable-for-you limits of your budget (as it was ultimately not for me), I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anything comparable in terms of performance and uniqueness. I hesitate to say value because that's pretty subjective, but I think folks seriously shopping the Boss know what they want and don't want, and the Boss delivers a heck of a lot of "wants" with very little compromise for enthusiasts.

Just curious to see which cars you feel would be a superior choice to the Boss at $35,000 - $40,000.

Test driving the boss was just for fun. I wanted to see what it felt like and it was impressive. Unfortunately I don't think I would spend that kind of money on a mustang. For about $40,000, I'd rather find a decent used E92 M3...
