That's the car I'd like to upgrade to someday... but I also worry about the frustration of an automatic. Awesome car and thanks for the write up!

Yeah,I know what he's say'in.I sold my 04' s2k to buy a c6 and love the power but really miss the s2k.I'm putting headers and exhaust on this week which should get me an extra 40 lb ft of torque at 2k rpms but unless you've owned an s2k you can't understand how incredible a sports car it really is.I'm shoppin for a used s2k to keep the Vette company. The Vette is great but so is the s2k.

Both the SLK and the C-6 are nice pieces that I would love to include in my stable (if I had one).

It is gratifying to see that both of you have a warm and special place in your 's for the S2K.

As an ex-motor cycle road racer, I have always enjoyed my 03 but it was not till tracking it at FCT04 that I truly learned to appreciate what a world class car it is at a price that makes it a real steal. It perhaps, is the epitome of peak of the deminishing return curve, where one has to spend a lot to get a little bit more.

goodluck w/ her!
1. Thank you!
2. Yes. The one I bought was the only one they had. They had 2 Maybach 62s, 4 CL65's, and an SL65, but only one slk55, so I took it off the showroom floor for a drive. The great thing about test driving a V8 like that is that there is so much power and torque available just off idle, so you don't have to rev it really hard and feel bad about abusing someone else's car.
3.MSRP starts in the 60's I believe, but in typical Mercedes fashion, there are still tons of options. Most sticker between $64k and $74k from what I have heard. I paid MSRP- if you are in the market for one, don't let anyone tell you that you have to pay over.

good review, thanks. just yesterday i was at a benz dealership looking at the new slk. i know the non AMG version can come with a 6 speed manual, did you happen to test drive that? doesn't have the V8, true, but i'm interested to see how the slk's manual feels. especially since i've heard such great things about the S's tranny.
I did not get a chance to drive the 350 with the 6 speed. However, even without driving it, I can tell you it is nowhere near as good as the s2000's shifter. The s2k has without a doubt the most precise and positive feeling shifter in any car available in the states. You simply will not find a better one anywhere, so don't even bother looking. The only one that comes close is the 5 speed in the MX-5 (also an incredible, if underrated car)

Congrats.

Why did you choose the SLK55 over the Corvette C6, BMW M3, Porsche 997 S and Porsche Boxster S?

Nice write-up...I find it odd that MB offers a 6 spd manual in the SLK350 but not in the AMG version. My daily driver would no doubt be an SL55 if they offered it with a real tranny. Phenomenal car and it handles much better than most would think considering it's heft. On the shifter issue...I have yet to own a car that shifts as well as the S2000. My NSX was kinda close but nothing else comes near... the P-car was nice but a little notchy for my taste, almost like the one in my 03 Cobra. The one in the M3 is one of the worst I have owned in recent years...it's difficult to believe it's the same tranny in the E39 M5 as it is MUCH smoother in the 5.

Nice, good luck

However, IMO the tranny is a deal breaker. I know it's tough to say, but for a sports car it's gotta be 3-pedals and a stick (for me).

I think MB is working on a DSG like Audi. Should be better, but: MT > SMG/DSG > AT (IMO)

Just for the MT, I'd rather get the Boxster S
