Here's a tip for you, buddy - most Porsche owners don't buy their cars based to be king of the hill street racers.

i have driven both and think if you have a S2000 the boxser S is the next step up in cars to have, it has two trunks, a better interior, perhaps a bit more hp, the pinash of a porsche and the expense...the radio is better and you can find one with nav, the windows are one touch and there are so many other things, like better seats, a lined top, etc...the cost to own depends on your use...for me it would be as my honda is a 2nd car so the maintenance is not an issue. i would probably bring my porsche to the dealer for oil changes and such, whereas the honda is done by me in my garage for 90% of its needs. the cost to own is on the honda side and the performance difference is not the main issue, at least for me, the honda is a bargain performance wise, and gets better mpg every day.

but the porsche is a great ride and has nothing to do with not being able to own a 911, i have owned a 911, nice car but the boxster is more appealing to me especially with the over all savings to buy and upkeep.

if cost is not an issue then by all means get the p car, everyone who loves cars should be able to have at least one in their life...if you can do it ...do it...if youcan't the s2000 is a great car, period.

either way you are not settling for anything, these are great cars in their own right.

I've told you the story before. Cayman S, looked like a new car, guy was weaving in and out of traffic going down 77 here in Charlotte, driving like an asshole, gets about two feet off my rear bumper and revs his engine, then when he gets a break, jumps to the right lane and floors it at about 70 mph...I return the favor in 3rd and immediately pull two cars on him then let off....let him pass, then a few more miles pull up next to him in fourth at about 80 and we roll up to about 120 at which point I have 3-4 cars on him, it's not even close....he veers off the highway and grabs the next exit, never saw him since...100% fact

I'd still take the S2000.

The Boxster's rear styling just does not work for me. The 911 rear is the only current Porsche I really like; the Caymen looks alright, but still has a bit of the styling issue for me.

If not the S, I'd look at an M3 convertible.

I will get the boxter. Can't beat its MR layout and the engine sound behind your back.

mid engine cars looks like an incredible pain in the neck to work on...how is it to change spark plugs, for example? and if you take it to a Porsche dealer for new plugs it's what, $400-$500? more? I like to do everything on the car myself if at all possible

Yeah, not typical DIYs. You would have to remove one of the rear wheels.

Doesn't sound too bad. I have to remove my right-front wheel to get to the oil filter on my civic si. Now I can brag about my civic being as exotic to maintain as a Porsche.

Interesting...

I paid cash for my 2008 911S last year and knock on wood, I have no problems making my house payments. But I still hang out here from time to time because I loved my S2Ks and often find reasonable people who share my enthusiasm for cars of any brand to trade thoughts and ideas with.

If I was going to buy a convertible, I don't know that I would chose the 997 over the 987. The current 987S is a really a great platform.

I wouldn't be so sure about this.

My Carrera S is less expensive to insure than either my NSX or my S2Ks were. It seems that driver demographics make a huge difference in insurance rates.

Moreover, I believe the question was a new S2K vs. a used 987S. The P car has already taken a serious whack with depreciation and I'm not so sure I'd make the bet that dollar for dollar the new S2K isn't going to be worse off from a depreciation standpoint going forward than the used Porsche.
