Default S2000 and a couple Porsches

This is all hypothetical, I just wanted to see what people think. I can't afford to do any of this.

My favorite car of all time is my S2000. I absolutely love it to death. It is wonderful to drive, cheap to own/operate, and perfectly reliable. But, it kinda sucks as a daily driver. It's small, cramped, loud, uncomfortable, and rides rough. So I'd like a daily driver.

One of my other favorite cars of all time is the Boxster/S/Cayman/S. I think they are gorgeous, and more rewarding, if less exciting, to drive than the S2000. I think the Cayman looks cooler, and is less "obvious" than the Boxster. But, it isn't a convertible. I HAVE to have a convertible. Given that $65k buys either a Boxster S or a Cayman S, there are two possible scenarios:

-Keep S2000, buy Cayman S
-Sell S2000, buy Boxster S, buy $20k daily driver (Accord or whatever) with S2000 sale proceeds

So what would you do? A garage with a Cayman AND an S2000 sounds about perfect, but I feel like I'd always wish I was driving the S2000 when in the Cayman, and vice versa, primarily due to the convertible factor. A Boxster would be the perfect compromise between the two, but I don't know if I like it as much as I like both of the other two.

So what would you do? Two sports cars in the garage, each with their own purpose? Or one dual-purpose car and a more normal/boring DD?

Again, just a hypothetical, but these are the scenarios that keep me up at night.

Hey Chris, I have a 987S and I struggle with the same dilemma. I, too, love the S2000 and miss it. I'd loved to get another but it doesn't make much sense to replace my Boxster with it, and it makes even less sense to have 2 roadsters.

Ideally, I'd love to get a 335i to go w/ the Boxster, but that would be financially irresponsible for me. In your hypothetical scenario, a good option might be to keep the S2000 (add FI ) and lease the 335i. BMW has great lease program - my brother leases 335i for $500/mo w/ no money down and $4,000 in security deposit ($ you get back at lease end). The 2 cars are very different yet very enjoyable in their own ways.

If these scenarios keep you up at night, you need real problems!

I was really reluctant to give up my S2000 when I bought my Cayman S, but there's only room for 1 sports car in our 3 car garage (wife takes 1, motorcycles the other). I even thought about keeping it at my in-laws' big garage, but being 80+ miles away, I knew how little I'd drive it. So I sold the S2000.

A week later, the pain was gone, and I realized how rarely I'd have driven the S2000 faced w/ a choice, Keep in mind I have motorcycles for that open-air feeling, and w/o them I may have a different perspective.

Given all I can tell about your situation, I'd go for a 987 Boxster S. Much better DD, & still a convertible. That said, I'd love to have a Boxster S and a Cayman S, but would still pick a CS if I could only have one.

From what you said, it seems you would much happier with both the S2k and th Cayman. If you don't really need a practical vehicle, I would do it.

Option 2 is quite stupid imho

I gave up my S2000 for an old 2000 Boxster S and have no regrets.

I get to keep the drop top convertible factor and enjoy:

-a car that weighs 2855 pounds
-had 250HP and 225 Torque
-amazing brakes, better than S2K
-amazing steering feel, much better than S2K
-mid-engine design and feel of engine screaming behind ears from 4000 to 7000RPMs
-good build quality

things that I miss about my S2K:

-shifter
-steering response-quickness

You decide

And I say sell S2000, buy Boxster S and that's it.

Don't buy a 20K beater if you don't need one that's just wasted money.

Invest that 20K and in 4 years use it and the resale value of your Boxster S to buy another fun roadster

Jacques, install the OEM short shifter, and you won't miss the S2000's much. Throws are a little longer, but much smoother and you'll never grind gears. There are aftermarket short shifters w/ even shorter throws, but not as smooth and irreversible since you have to bust off bushings, whereas the OEM solution includes a whole new cage that bolts right in.

I replaced mine w/ a short shifter, and what a difference!

I'd think I'd want two cars that are more different. Like a sport sedan and the S.
