S2000 or Cayman S?

I'm leaning heavily towards the s2000 and look forward to becoming more active on s2ki soon. As of now it's just a waiting game until I find an s2000 that I really want and I'll snatch it up! With the money I'll be saving from not buying/maintaining a Cayman, I'll probably get a hardtop and a couple of nice suits. Thanks again everyone!

I think there is quite a bit of truth to the not wanting to pay for a 911, but that is why there are both models. The increase in utility of a 911 over a Cayman is somewhat small, that difference is worth quite a bit of money to a wealthy person, but not someone that is less affluent. all things being equal, virtually everyone would prefer a 911 over a Cayman if they cost the same, just like everyone would rather bang Kate Beckinsale than Rosie O'Donnell. For me, I bought an S2000 because I didn't really want to spend the money on an F430, I also didn't want to buy a helicopter, a herd of seahorses or a 3 pound block of ex-lax, so I didn't.

I've driven a 2006 997 911 C2 and 2009 Cayman S back to back and preferred the Cayman. The acceleration was almost identical, but while the 911 felt heavy and planted the Cayman felt nimble and faster reacting.
As to the original topic at hand (as you've already figured out) a Cayman S is not realistically in your budget for now. Personally, I plan to "trade up" to a Cayman S when the 2009s start dropping into the high 20s low 30s. But for now I'll just enjoy my torque-less wonder

Considering I'm spending make-believe money, I would "virtually" prefer a Cayman over a 911.

Imo if the cayman had he same engine options of the 911 and therefore the same pricing exclusivity the decision would practically be unanimous, which lends to the theory that the cayman is inherently better. Me, i respect the 911s, but only in gt2 and gt3 form, otherwise cayman s for me. If the cayman received comprable gt2 and gt3 form, id wonder why the owner o the 911 just didnt get the cayman.

I am coming from my 993 being stolen. I would hold off on the car until out of school. I wouldn't park a soft top on a campus. Porsche maintenance is expensive even through a good cheap mechanic or yourself. I would get an s2k given choices and situation though.
I would take a Cayman over a 997. I have driven both very hard.

Why are so many people in this thread acting like college campuses are full of miscreants and vandals?

If you take your Porsche to the dealership for an oil change it'll cost around $200. Buy the S2000 and get an 09+ Cayman S in the future. If you think you will be able to handle the maintenance costs of a Porsche then go for it. The earlier Gen. 1 model Caymans had the IMS and RMS issues, IMS being the most feared.
