man
it's so good to have rich parents! (not bashing, just envy-ing ...)
well, if you have a lot of things/people to hauling around all the times and this is going to be your only car, get the BMW.
otherwise, get the S2K and then buy some winter tires for winter in canada!
just my $0.02 simple solution to your question

Dude, i was in the EXACT same situation! i just graduated from high school and my parents were buying me a new car. i was set on a 330ci because i really liked my cousins 328i sport package. but, one of my other cousins bought a 01 ITR and my mind was totally changed! The cheaper ITR out did the beamer in every performance aspect, i know because they went at it until my cousin wrecked his 328i. the 330 is balanced, performance with luxury, the s on the other hand is pure performance.
Also i dont know how you can say that they are in the same price range? dont most beamers come with expensive options? i was going to get a fully loaded 330 with harmon kardon, nav, and sport package for 39k+!
Screw practicality! your young! go for the s2k, its a lot more fun, turns more heads, and its a rag top! although it would be a different story if you could con your parents into getting you a ///M3

If I could only have one vehicle, and someone else was footing the bill, I'd take the 330 Ci, Xenon's, Sport, Moonroof, in Titanium Silver with leather.
About $41K MSRP, maybe you could get $1000 or $1500 if you are lucky off list...

Given your demographic, I would say the S2000 would be better. It doesn't barely snow in Vancouver so really the S can be your all year round car so it takes that argument out. Secondly, you don't need to rev the crap out of the S to have a normal cruiser. Thirdly, you're young still and the S is more of a young person car then a 330Ci is. Reliability, that is a toss up. Fourthly, you can use the money you save getting the S on a hardtop. Finally, the S is 10X more attention getting than a 3 series, just by experience, don't know if that is a good thing or not, depends on what you value. You really can't go wrong with either car.

I owned a 323ci and my S2000 at the same time for several months until I sold the BMW a few months ago. Granted, the 330ci is quite a bit quicker than the 323ci but I think I can still compare my experience. The BMW is an awesome car: quick, great handling, luxury, prestige, looks, etc. Although the S2000 has many of these same traits, it is a very different beast. The S provides a much more visceral driving experience: slightly quicker, no traction control, open air driving, LOUD (at least compared to the BMW), less forgiving handling, etc.. Basically it comes down to do you want a sports car (with all its advantages and disadvantages) or a luxury sports sedan? I wish all of life's decisions were this hard!!
