The LS1 swap into the RX7 does sound pretty good on paper, but swapping a rotary for pushrod engine doesn't sound right.
Two of my friends have LS1 powered RX-7s (FC). They are SICK. Trust me, there is nothing blasphemous about taking a capable chassis and putting in a lightweight, reliable, and POWERFUL engine in it. Both cars are stupid fast, and handle just as well as they did stock. Well, better actually since they are running wider fenders and huge tires now. I even considered selling my S and doing an LS1/FD swap. Actually, I'm still thinking about it.

My friend down the road has two FD's with LS1 and a turbocharged LT1 swap in them....the LS1 swap (like mentioned by Brock) is AMAZING!!! absolutley no reliability issues (wiring/transmission) was a pain (I helped him do the conversion), but the results speak for themselves...handling was not affected too much. Let's put it this way...the LS1 weighs just about the same as the 13b plus the intercoolers/turbos and etc....

Sure the weight isn't exactly 50/50 anymore, but it hasn't changed too much. Regarding the LT1 Turbo...that's going to be a drag car.

I love FC and FD RX7s. I used to drive an 89 FC back in the day...fun car. The FDs are amazing tho! I would have one if the 13B wasn't so unreliable. As many have mentioned, the seals go quickly, especially if you're modified for more power. Even the 3mm apex seals go in 60k miles if you're pushing more than stock HP. Engine rebuilds aren't cheap either. With a widebody, the FD looks like a dream car to me...I only needed a good engine to throw in there. I even threw around the idea and spoke to some shops about a custom 4-rotor Renesis, but didn't want to be the guinea pig for that. I never knew ppl were throwing vette engines into RX7s, but now that I know, I may have to reconsider the FD again...I love that car!

For those more up to date with RX7 swaps: What other engines have ppl been putting into FD chassis? I've always wanted an FD, so I'd like to know if other reliable powertrain options exist. Thanks.

I just came back from a DE event organized by the Supra club of Texas (or somesuch).

About half a dozen Supras died on the track that day.

I wouldn't even consider owning a modded Supra which is supposed to be bullet-proof and infinitely more reliable than a modded RX-7.

As with any modded high-horsepower car, tuning is a critical part. Some owners are usually clueless about tuning and maintaining, hence their cars often die. Yes, Supras are pretty much bulletproof, IF the modifier knows what he's doing.

RE Supras, you'd be surprised how many are running turbo bandaids like piggy back fuel controllers, adjustable FPRs, etc. w/o any real form of engine management...yup, poof! If I were building one and got a Turbonetics or other lower-priced turbo setup, I'd take that saved money and get an AEM EMS at the least.

RE V8 RX7s, I did more research. It seems those RX7 guys are some crazy mofos, throwing virtually any FR-layout powertrain into the FC and FD 7s. So far, I've been able to find LSx/LTx, Ford, Nissan VQ/SR20DET/RB25DET/RB26DETT, Toyota 2JZ-GTE/1JZ-GTE/1UZ-FE, and even a Honda F20C (in an FC). I wonder who'll be the first to drop in the LS7 into an RX7. I'm seriously thinking about a hybrid-FD now...likely an LS1 or LS2 (if I can find a cheap enough LS2)...ooh...tempting...the only thing holding me back is the lack of money...that's probably a good thing tho, else I'd have tons of bastardized cars.
