Of that list I'd probably narrow it down to the following:

G35 Coupe (6 speed...should I wait for the '05 higher output model or take a deal on an '04?)
WRX STi
TL (the S version or A version, not sure of which letter, but you guys know what I mean)
Lancer Evo
Legacy (the new 250 hp GT version)
RX-8
BMW 330 (might be out of the price range, but I would make an exception I think)
Plus maybe add:
R32

were you happy with you jag experience?
if so, i would go for another. if you want cheap, get an x-type with 5 speed and sport pkg. awd and a 3.0 engine is a nice combo. the resids are factory supported and the money factor is practically zip. maintenance is also now included. they're practically giving the things away. in my area it's $199/month 24 months, $2,xxx due and the personal property tax is picked up by jag finance.

I test drove the GTO at a recent GM test drive event in San Fran, and would personally recommend staying away from it. It's performance, nor interior quality is up to any standard.
I'd personally go with the TL from your list. Nice performance, more practical than having two 2-doors, excellent interior, and all for much less than the BMW or G35.

The GTO was very sluggesh. It was too heavy, and it atleast 'felt' underpowered by a lot despite the engine rating. And being a GM test drive event, I doubt they would have sabotoged their own car.
I've driven the TL and it's pretty nice. It's hard to say it's great since I'm comparing it to the S2000. But for what it is, a FF 4 door, it's hard to do better. Much better than my Accord Coupe V6. Oh, and the stereo kicks ( * ).

[QUOTE=Legal Bill,Sep 29 2004, 11:56 AM] Plyrs3, the funny thing is, I wrote the first post over a couple of times before posting it because I thought I had too much detail in it.

^ Good analysis. I don't often take clients out in my car, so that isn't really an issue. I'm also well past the prestige/appearance concerns. If I wanted a MB S series, I could buy one. The fact is I don't want one. Now that the kids have grown, I want to get back to the sportier smaller cars rather than the ponderous mid-size sedans.
I agree that the Evo and STi have too much of a boy-racer look. I wish Saab would also do a version of the Sti sedan because I really do like the look of their version of the WRX wagon.

They discontinued the R32 and that concerns me. I have owned two new VWs in my time, a palin jane 1989 Golf and a 1987 16v Sirocco. I liked the Sirocco a lot and traded it in too soon. This will sound weird since I have the Mini on my list, but the R32 is too boxy for me.
Might want to look into the new Mazdaspeed 6.. I posted a thread about it a few days ago here in Car Talk.. The thing looks pretty sweet (an EVO, STI, Legacy competitor)..
