Would you be upset if Honda brought out an S2000 and wanted to race a Porsche? Would that be cool or would you think Honda is overstepping their bounds?
IMO if that were to happen Honda would be the joke. The thing is, Honda would never resort to a marketing scheme like that because Honda has class. They make what they make and they don't make excuses or apologies in their marketing and they don't use gimmicks like a Porsche challenge on a Kart track.

But who cares that Mini has no class? It's not something we're getting all upset about - it's just a fact worth mentioning.

Pure marketing entertainment, which was very well done.

Look at all the attention it is still getting today.

I'd call that successful.

I do agree with CosmosMpower, something about the times tells me this showdown was not without bias.

You obviously haven't seen Honda's race car "inspired" Accord Coupe commercial. I'd call that one of the most gimmicky things I've ever seen.

+ 1.

Ironically, MINI recently did the official reveal of the facelifted version of all their products. Even though the aesthetics aren't changed much a lot of other areas are pretty substantial. Coincidence?

No I haven't seen the commercial, does Honda claim their Accord coupe is faster than an obviously superior car in maybe a parallel parking contest? That's what I call a gimmick.

22k Cooper S, 0 to 60mph-6.3sec, 28city 36hwy, almost any available amenity?

I can't think of any other car that gives that much speed, fun, and efficiency at such a low price.

And meanwhile, back at MINI headquarters, the marketing guys are laughing their butts off and high fiving each other, saying "people are STILL talking about it!"

Your original response indicated performance so I mentioned the car in the OP. They could have went with a JCW but went with a Cooper S. The pricing is in accord with the Civic Si, Mazdaspeed 3, etc. until you start adding things like self adjusting xenons, navi, etc. Then the pricing climbs quite fast.
