Are radar detectors still useful?

Got an Escort 8500. Good unit but got to use some intuition to help it out. The Escort manual is a good read on how to use it.
The instant on radar will only alert in time if they target someone in front of you and you have picked up on that. If you are the only car they hit. You will likely get nailed.
Hard wire the unit to the ignition. It isn't going to work too well if you forget to turn it on.
I still like the 8500 but the new 9500 is much better. Don't have experience with the V1 but I suspect it is also a good unit. Read some of the reviews and buy the best you can afford.
Great entertainment value for long trips as well, they only speak when needed but keep you on your toes.
A few states have attempted to enact legislation to allow confiscation of radar detectors (Va and Conn come to mind, they have tried but not sure how successful). This info is available by doing some searching on the net.
A good one will last a long time, can go from car to car, likely to pay for itself and actually keep you more alert and safer when in use.
I consider it one of the most valuable purchases I could have made for my rig.
Drive smart and alert.

laser
a cop has to use a range finder, he is standing on the side of the road. where there is really no proper defense against ladar you are generally saved since the cop has to stand there and aim the thing. usually too much trouble for them. i worked at a laser company and personally never found any laser scramblers that degraded the signal.
radar
i have a radar gun (from the company i worked at) and i have use it at the track. on the way back home a passenger in my truck aimed it at on coming cars. there were no brake lights, very few, no one had a radar detector. the guns have to emit considerable signal to get anything back so they are easy to detect

I've heard good reviews about laser shifters by escort. Like the Laser Shifter ZR4. It goes on your plates, where police aim the laser. I think it works by shooting the laser in the other direction so the gun does not get a reading. But they are illegal in some states. I am getting a 9500i and ZR4 soon, I'll write a in-depth review.

I've had a v-1 for years... in terms of perfomance and customer service it is number one in my book. I had mine for several years and it broke... sent it back to Valentine along with a check to have it repaired... a short time later I get my repaired unit back, my uncashed check, and a short hand written note saying the problem was a manufacturing defect and that the unit had been fixed for free. They have a customer for life.
In terms of performance it has saved my arse enough time that it has paid for itself way more times than I can count.
I've had a Cobra, Whistler, and Escort... V-1 is the only unit for me.

I have a 9500i which has paid for itself more than once, but i noticed in my area cops are starting to turn off their radars now at night since so many people have radar detectors and just trying to nail the "harder criminals" like reckless driving etc. I dont know how this is working for them from a revenue perspective but now the casual speeder will be able to get away but if someone wants to open up their car at night with no traffic they might get nailed for reckless driving instead of speeding.

Just got snapped by a speed camera 2 days ago. Haven't had a speeding ticket for over 7 years. Looks like I do need a radar detector after all ...
Looking into 9500xi now ... hehe
