Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson says the Cayman could've been better than the 911, but the engineers held back since it can't be better than their icon car (what's the word where the company is known because of this car?). It's suuposed to just fill a gap in between the Boxter and 911.

^That looks great but how much?
Figure the front clip is probably around $8,000 installed, the LSD around $3,000, the X51 motor swap around $20,000 - I do not know how much GT3 seats go for, nor some of the other features. If I were to guess.......in the GT3 to Turbo territory.......and it would be a competitor for one of those cars.

There was an article in excellence with a X51 swap. The car listed for $118k IIRC.
You migt not agree with clarkson but I think he is absolutely correct. The cayman S is great car and could have been awesome if wasn't for the 911. You might not like Clarkson's brutal honesty but its a lot better than the crap we read in US mags. Btw, have you seen the CGT testdrive video by Clarkson. He absolutely drools over it.

I don't like Porsche. I think that they've become too big, too grand and too expensive. I prefer sports cars to super cars. That said, I love the Cayman. It's the only Porsche (aside from an old 356C) that I'd ever consider. It's the first time in a long time that Porsche decided to return to its roots. It'll probably never happen because I am addicted to open to sports cars, but if I were looking for a hard topped sports car it might very well be the Cayman.

I'm curious why the Cayman is good in your book, but, as you are a fan of open sports cars, the Boxster is apparently not.
The Cayman, no matter what Porsche says, really is just a Boxster with a roof, especially since the Boxster gets the Cayman engine for 2007.
Personally, I'd take a Cayman or Boxster over a 997, but that's just me.
